Any body heard, played, seen, or even heard of a baritone lap steel? Scale length 27" - 29"?
Any advice or tricks to know?
Thanks a heap |

There is a set of tapes of Barney Isaacs playing (in a Hawaii Calls context I think) on a baritone tuning on his far neck of a Stringmaster...basilh shared it recently in a Facebook group. It isn't longer scale, but the Fender triple and quad neck Stringmasters we're designed to take heavy gauge strings for baritone tunings on the far neck...tuner shafts have wider holes, nut slots wider, etc. _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Ryan Rukavina has made a few, like all of his guitars - it sounded great! |

He's got a 4-string bass lap steel right now:

I have a Danelectro U-2 reissue from the 90s that I set up with a nut extender and tune to open E, but with low bass open G type intervals, low to hi:
B-E-B-E-G#-B
So it's like a 25.5" scale, I think. Low and growly. Fun. |

Oh you went and did it now....I have a Danelectro Hodad Baritone, 27 or 28 inch scale. Currently tuned to Bass Vi tuning but I may have to try it with an open tuning and nut extender!! _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Whenever a guitar player tells me he might wanna try playing steel guitar, I always tell them that they can try it for just a few dollars (for the extender) if they've got an extra guitar lying around. It amazes me how few of them actually try it. Easiest way to find out if you might want to purchase a real lap steel.
Anyway, I string mine with a heavy electric guitar set (13s). Not quite as much tension as I'd like, but given it's not a squareneck, I don't wanna push it too much. Just need a little less pressure with the bar hand.
Not sure what set you might use for the scale of the Hodad - maybe the strings you use regularly on the baritone might work. |
