This spring goes between the crossbar and the body and pulls the edge of the crossbar towards the body.

Mine broke and now the 5th string does not return to pitch unless I pull up on the (A) pedal or pull a bit on the hex nut.

I've managed to bend it a little and reattach it but it scrapes against the crossbar and makes a racket.

I'd like to know what these springs are called - I've been told by many that BMI does not have 'helper springs' so they must be something else, as they do not look like other helper springs I have seen.

Any help graciously appreciated.

Based on your description of what it’s doing and the photo, I’d say that spring’s primary job is to return the cross-bar to it’s zero position and provide clearance between the cross-bar and mounting rail? I’d call it a “return spring”. I sure hope you’re able to contact the folks at BMI and get an official explanation/name for the part in question, and resolve your setback? Best of luck!

Call BMI. Don will take good care of you.
