Lightweight Steels

Post by Eric Gearhart »

What are some good quality lightweight S10's on the market? Three herniated discs will probably make this a necessity for me! Thanks for any info.

GFI. Lightest around. Very solid. Great sounding and playing. Compact with the keyless head. I have one for sale on "Instruments for sale"

I have 2 herniated discs, Carter was the lightweight guitar of my choice about 6 months ago and it turned out to be a great choice..

My Excel Superb S-10 6+4 (keyless) weighs 30 pounds out of the case, and the case weighs 12 pounds. Five raises and 5 lowers with superior engineering.

I can't argue with any of the 3 brands listed. I'd also add Franklin but there is a "waiting line" for them and it's rare that one shows up on the resale market.

The choice is simple. Just buy a Williams keyless. The S-10 is 25 lbs out of the case, and it's a wonderful guitar.
Nuff said.

I also have a disc problem so I try to keep the weight to a minimum. My Carter D10 weighs 25 lbs and the pedal bar, legs, and rods weigh 12 lbs. With just the steel in the 20 pound case it is only 45 pounds. I carry the other 12 pounds in another case that is much lighter. Jud Image

Lamar.

It's wood cabinet, lacquer finish, and very light. Very compact for his keyless S-10. <H>

Check with Jim at Lone Star Steel. He makes a "space frame" steel called the skeleton. It looks strange, but only weighs in at around 15 pounds and has a sliding pickup for a wide range of tones. I'm really thinking about one, but I have to sell/trade some standard guitar stuff off first or I'll be living in a tent in the backyard.....
;-)

(no joke about the steel - I've hear good things aboutt it, and the price is REAL attractive as well, especially since he'll make it just about any way you want it).

Great inputs! Thanks. I was just wondering. At present, I have a fully restored LDG that will sit and stay set up in the guitar room. If I decide to go mobile, I'll have to shop around for some of those steels mentioned. This type of head spinning is preferable to the type set on by pain killers!

GFI for sure, they are great quality and the Economy Models are very easy to move around. they look great, sound great & play great. I have two brand new ones for sale with 3&3.

Ernie, I'm not able to bring up any pics from your site. Looks ineresting, though. I will probably go with GFI when the time comes - although I would need 4 knee levers. I've also been thinking about the LR Wiggins 8 string. I'll keep your site on my desktop.

I have a GFI Ultra keyless and the weight is good even with my pad model. I'm sometimes surprised though, how much extra a case adds to the carrying weight of any PSG. The GFI comes with a great case. It just seems that the case is a part of this that might be improved on with some sort of lighter weight material. I say this as I've been playing out fairly regularly for the first time in years and my lower back is feeling it.

I'm sure all the above suggestions are given from experience and should "weigh" in your eventual decision.
