Yep!
I use a padded Keyboard bag. Works well, usually less than $50 bucks. Make sure you have a leg/rod bag and a pedal bar bag so they don't ding up your steel.
Another route is to do a two case deal (one for body and one for pedal bar, legs, and rods. I have one on order from our own Gary Phillips (GLP Cases).
He is doing the cases for Desert Rose and Rains and they are really nice cases at a good price. |

Can't say what Bobbe is using now, but a couple years ago he was using a case for his D-10 PP that was made out of the same stuff they used to use for drummers trap cases. When I 1st saw it I thought: Man! Why didn't I think to have that done years ago? Maybe Bobbe will see this thread and tell where he had it made.
I like the keyboard gig bag idea. On local or regional gigs I don't see where it would be a problem.

Does one size fit all, or are they custom made for each make of steel? Inquiring minds (as simple as they may be) want to know.
It sure would reduce the weight of my Emmons. I use a separate bag for my pedal bar, legs & rods, but a few more pounds that could be reduced is still worth checking into.

Well when you order one from Dyke Corson; you will give him the measurements of your steel.

Thanks everyone for the positive response on the hard bag. I worked on this project with a builder in Michigan and just when they got the product right where I wanted it, they went out of business!! So I am in the process of getting quotes from two other builders. As soon as I see some samples and get firm prices we should be ready to roll again with this product. I will keep everyone posted and I apologize for the delay. |

SKB Makes a drum trap case 11X36 with wheels that works well as a case for D-10's
Any of the dealers like Sam Ash orZZZounds , Musicians friend sell them.
Search " Trap Case ".

I bet that case of Bobbe's came from Woody Woodell. I saw Jay Andrews with his one night, and I had Woody make me something similar - one case for the body and another for the pedal bar and leg/rod bag. I also got him to make one for my Steelers' Choice seat - that's been very useful on tours.
The number I have for Woody is: 615-851-7058.

Woody makes excellent cases (hardback). He fabricated one for my Nashville 112 that certainly has protected the amplifier very well. I still have not bent, broken or snapped one single knob since I started using the case. BTW the case is strong enough and just the right heigth to act as an amp stand.

Seems wiser to just put wheels/casters on your current case.

I use one of those keyboard bags also just my dad and I are a little paranoid about that so we cut up a little piece of those foam mattresses to put in there. I notice a huge difference its great. |

Are we talking about a soft gig bag for pedal steel? If so, I would never ever use one. Even on local gigs your steel could be bumped or it could move during transit. The best thing to use is the hard shell case. Put wheels on it or have someone carry it for you. I see guys around where I live that carry their steels around with out the case or with one of these soft bags, and I just shake my head. One day their steel will be damaged. Duane Becker |

I'm certainly not talking about a soft shell gig bag. The picture of the case that I put up there; is a hard foam that your steel goes in and you can bump it; throw it and do whatever and your steel is very protected.....You just can't run over it with your car is all. I use it for everything...wheather I drive or ride in a bus or have to pack in with other equip. or whatever and it is no problem>and I play a very very highly collectable LDG Sho-bud> I just wouldn't fly with it.

If I can't run over it with my car, I don't want it! I love running over my steels with my car, I have special cars just for this one perpose.

The case I'm showing above; is the same type case that Big Jim Murphy used and toured with Asleep at the Wheel for years, and he had is Bethel in it; which I changed strings for him every month and NOTHING ever happend to his Bethel.
This is a Hard Foam that well protects your steel as it absorbs shock; as your hardshell case DOES NOT. A hardshell case will vibrate with any shock; dropping; equipment slamming into it..etc....and will vibrate your steel; which means loosened screws; loose tuning keys; end plates; aprons..crossbars....and also the staples or nails that hold the lining and partitian and end fittings as they eventually weeeeed their way out and scratch endplates and so on.
The only time Big Jim would use a flight case would be to fly....otherwise it was alwasy in this hard foam over the shoulder bag(two pieces) and nobody treats their equipment worse than the roadies/guys in the equipment truck of Asleep at the wheel.
I of course wouldn't suggest something unless I've tried it or know for a fact it works; or if you just are simply tired of "mr. know-it-all" Ricky Davis; and will end up not believing anything I say no matter what...than so be it> but I certainly wouldn't put something down if I've never tried it; that shows aweful character; and I certainly don't want to be that.

GOOD NEWS! I have a builder who will try to get me samples in 4 to 6 weeks. He will have a fiberglass option available as well. This will be a thin layer between the Cordura and hard foam. He claims this will give even more protection, still keeping the weight at a minimum. Thanks so much for all the e-mails and I will keep you all posted!! |
