I have an old Thompson D-10 that I inherited last year from my good friend's wife, following his passing. It's got a nice sound, and looks a bit like a Sho-Bud. It was made in the 70's in Michigan, I believe. It's an all-pull, basic 8+4.
Anyway, the undercarriage leaves much to be desired. The rods are all twisted, and there's generally not much sense to it. It's gummy under there, if you get my drift. However, the changers seem fine and the tuners are great. It's one heavy mother, so I was contemplating gutting it and then converting it to an SD-10. How much trouble would it be for me to do this? The levers and pedals are fine, and everything else looks workable. It's just the rods and springs that are shot. I'm not an expert at the mechanics of a pedal steel, so I'm looking for advice about this idea. I was thinking that if I got the necessary rods and springs, I could piece it together and take off the back neck, getting someone local to make me a pad. It could be an opportunity to learn more about the undercarriage.
