Unbelievable. Simply love it.
Are you playing with a regular guitar pick?

Doug, you are one of those players who actually deserves to be on YouTube. It is always a treat!

PS- Oh yeah, the flatpick is definitely against the rules :D

Thanks all! Yes, I'm playing with a flat pick. I had to use a flat pick to play that thumpidy-thump part. Couldn't get that sound with fingerpicks. I guess this is considered a surf tune, but I always thought of it a Western theme: Indians, galloping horses, the cliche Indian riff on the intro and outro. Thanks for checking it out.

Thanks Will, the Fender is on loan from a friend. He played hundreds, or possibly thousands, of gigs on it back in the day. I polished the chrome and it looks good but the body is showing a lot of dings, cigarette burns, and discoloration. I’m sure every ding tells a story!

I love the staccato thumpy parts. Did you learn it off the Shadows or the Ventures version--or??

It seems to lay out real nice on the steel.

I’ve been playing the song for a few years and I can’t remember which version I learned it from. I do remember that the Ventures played a couple of different chords than the Shadows and I liked the Shadows version more. I also had the sheet music and it was closer to the Shadows version. But I liked how the Ventures played that thumping pattern, so I played it their way. I guess it’s a blend of both versions.

Surf and steel are a marriage made in lap steel heaven. Really beautifully played, Doug. In my new surf book I talk about the advantages of a flat pick for this music. The backing track is perfect too. Thanks for sharing!

Doug is too modest to admit that he has a wonderful arrangement of Apache tabbed out for 6-string C6 in one of his excellent tutorials.

Thanks guys for the kind comments. Yes, I have tab for this in my "25 MORE Songs" Book/CD for C6 lap steel. Click on the link below for more details. The tab is for 6-string. This version is played on 8-string, but it's very close to the 6-string version.

Very nice Doug.......I always look forward to your uploads. I think from memory this would be the Ventures version mainly. In the UK we only heard the Shadows version and we all played it! My elder brother somehow acquired a Ventures album with Apache on. I learned some of their licks and my little school band played it. All the aspiring guitarists was interested in this different arrangement. It did not do my school cred any harm at all! Mike

Thanks all, much appreciated. Here in the US we heard the Ventures a lot in the 60s. I never heard of the Shadows until a few years ago. I much admit though, I like the Shadows sound a lot... the arrangements, the production, the guitar tones. Their song "Wonderful Land" is my favorite.

It's no wonder you like that song. It sounds like one that's perfectly suited to a steel arrangement.

Are you, perhaps, working on one?
