Downward Upward Lick

Post by Sandro Rocco »

I don’t know how to describe this type of luck, but I hear it a ton and I have not been able to figure out the proper was of doing it. Noteable example in the below YouTube video about something unrelated.
Around the 40 second mark. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wjHRbu2z59s

What’s the trick to pulling that move off?

Thank you in advance.

The best I’ve been able to mimic is some downward slides and picking the same note on the way down - but it doesn’t sound nearly as good.

Sandro,
In 1999 I posted a tab of this type of lick to the tablature section of the Forum. A great local Iowa steel player taught it to me. The trick is to start the lick on string 9 two frets above the pedals up position and keep the strings ringing as you slide the bar back. Below you will find a link to my original post with the tab. It is from 1999, and tab on the Forum wasn't as sophisticated as it is now.
Here's the post:

Here is a link to a short audio clip of the lick:

Another, slightly different, version of this lick can be found in Red Steagall's song "Whatever Made Me Think". Here's a link to that song, and the lick starts at about 1:30.

Here it is again on Josh Turner's song "Your Man" at 2:35. Cool lick - I've always referred to it as a "smear" :)

Sandro,

Its a Buddy Emmons signature lick originally played on Ray Price's "Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me" and it has become one of the standard cliches everyone knows....Its @ 1:41

Bobby - that is a killer lick and Charleton pulls it off so "easily" and effectively.

Perhaps one of the Tabulature Creators here on the Forum could tab that one out for the rest of us's.

Surely would be appreciated
