I found the Spade Cooley album at frys electronics here in Austin (of all places !!! )about a month ago.

The Tex Willims on the air is on a label called Country Routes # rfd cd 17, from Czech Rebublic of all places. This is a must have. I got it from Amazon about a year or 2 ago, so they did have it in stock at one time. Probably sold out of stock because everyone's getting it for xmas!!! Looks like it is still in print though.

Transfering film to tape and one format of tape to another is everyday stuff for me.And if I don't have the particular machine, there are a hundred facilities in Hollywood that do.All it takes is a few bucks and a phone call.A kinescope is a movie film (usually 16mm B&W)of a live television show shot off a TV monitor(the best they could do in the days before video tape)What I don't quite understand Jody,is if you have the film or a video copy of the film. There are videos floating around of some of the movie shorts and "soundies" which were sort of the 1940s version of music videos featuring Cooley,Murph and so on. I have a few myself although they have been copied to death and some are even negative reversed for some reason so I wouldn't mind having better copies. But if somebody has rare one-of-a-kind kinescopes tho, they really should be duped and preserved. -MJ-

Chas and Michael
It has been called to my attention that my post was too long and very boring as well.

It's difficult to satisfy people on here,,,I speak well of someone,,and its boring,,,still think to sum it up,,you two fellows are great and I give you all my respect for what you did for Joaquin when he needed a friend the most.

He not only had "a" friend....he had two of them....the both of you.

I hope this satisfies the two e mails I received. My gosh..this world is getting weirder all the time.PLEASE NO E MAILS OK?

Stop the World I want to get off......

For those of you who feel life won't be worth living unless you can see Murph in action (and I count myself among you) - he's in a couple spots on a video put out by the same folks who did the Merle Travis videos. The company is Vestapol. It's mostly Bob Wills. Oh yeh, it also has that great shot of Bobby Koefer soloing on "Sittin' On Top of the World"...WOW!

Yeah, Dave. It was amazing how Bobby K. and Buddy Emmons could look around the room and smile and toss off an incredible solo without once looking at the guitar.

I'm with everyone else on Joaquin. The Joaquin of the late 40's remains untouchable to this day. I've watched the video clips over and over of Speedy West with Merle Travis and I still don't have much of an idea how he did it. My conclusion is the magic that is Joaquin, speedy, Jerry Byrd, comes from somewhere within ... what most of ous get to touch a few times in our musical lives if we're lucky is like direct current for them ... a straight line from heart to hands and the technique to pull it off.

Sorry for the late post, but I'm not online on the weekends. Yep, Jody I was born too late, but that ain't my fault, and it's not my dad's fault either, he was two years old when Joaquin left Spade's band Seriously, I'm glad so many people responded to this topic, I just wanted to people know about this cd. I didn't mention Amazon cause I didn't wanna sound like their salesman, but if you have no luck with them, try Hepcat Records in Orange County, they're online too and carry alot vintage country and western swing, European releases too. Actually, another release by Country Routes ( which is a British company btw, the cd's were only pressed in Chezch Rep. ) is their Cooley "On the Air", which features JM even more than the Tex Williams cd. Over twenty tracks , each with a lengthy Murphy solos. Studio recordings by Cooley are lame stuff, compared to this. Of course the sound quality is not to modern date, but so what!

Here's the site for the company, that puts out this stuff: www.interstate-music.co.uk

Radio transcribtions are released under Country Routes, other labels like Krazy Kat, focus on rare vintage r&b, country, etc.

Seems that Down Home Music in California is one of the distributors, try www.downhomemusic.com, their website lists all the Spade cd's on Country Routes

I did hear back from the UK distributor in my morning e-mail and while they didn't have any recomendations for distributors here in the US they will take credit cards and ship across the pond. I might try to exhaust the online sources first but it looks like a good option.
In addition to the Tex Williams cd that started this thread, now the question is which Spade CD should I get for the best Joaquin? They have one called C&W/Western Swing, one called 1941-1947 and one called Live at the Santa Monica pier and Riverside Rancho.
All input welcome.

I have, I believe, everything commercially available on Spade and Tex and "Spadella" is essential because those are some of the classic studio recordings of this great band.

Equally great, however, is the CD "Shame On You - Spade Cooley and the Western Dance Gang," a bunch of radio transcriptions that are significantly different from the studio versions on found on "Spadella" and are really fantastic recordings with Tex, Cactus, Smokey, Murph, Bamby, etc.

IMHO the best live performance Murph with Spade is on (Country Routes RFD CD 1Cool "Spade Cooley and his Western Dance Gang Radio Broadcasts 1945." Again, live radio with Tex, Smokey, Cactus, Tiny Hunt, Murph, Bamby, et. al.

I would say all three CD's I mentioned, plus the "Tex Williams Live 1947-49" are equally essential. When you hear the Spade stuff I mentioned above, you can hear that the Western Caravan just brought all the arrangements that Pedro wrote into their own repertoire.

There are also 3 tapes available from Jesse Morris (120 W. Van Buren #4, Colorado Springs CO 80907) that are excellent: two tapes of radio transcriptions of the Western Caravan, featuring not only Tex but a lot of Smokey and Deuce as well as some incredible instrumentals. Then there one called the "Joaquin Murphey Collection" that is Murph on the records of Ozie Waters, Eddie Dean, the Plainsmen, T. Texas Tyler, Jimmy Widener, and many more. All of these are really worth getting as well.

Don't forget Johnny Weis on guitar with Tex. One of those great western swing players with that Charlie Christian style, only wilder!

I agree with Herb, that out of the live-stuff, the GRCD18 is the one to get. The tape Jesse Morris is also essential, most of it is from old 78's, that have not been reissued anywhere. Club Of Spade albums also include some great Murphy solos, though not alot of them, but "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" only is worth tracking the album down.

I must say- I dig the Tex Williams "On the Air" disc for the most part. , but the 1st 8-10 songs have some speed problems. Perhaps the transcription disc was recorded that way, but the tracks are definitely sped up. The 1st track "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke...." has almost Chipmunk-like vocals...
