GFI Ultra S10 value?

Post by Marc Jenkins »

I just took stewardship of a GFI Ultra S10 (serial 1150) 3x4 from a really wonderful woman to whose deceased brother this steel belonged. It is in fantastic playing shape, though some of the wood-grain mica is peeling away a little. I don’t have a standard tuning wrench (my Sho-Bud uses Allen key) to fully tune it, but all seems in order.

I’m to hang on to this thing and use it for students etc, perhaps sell it down the line - she’ll donate the funds to a local music school if that happens.

What would a ballpark value on this be? Thanks in advance.

Marc,
I would do a search here on the Forum under "For Sale: Steel Guitars" and specify: "GFI steel guitar".
You should be able to pull up a bunch of GFI's. :D

Thanks Erv,
I did do that but the prices are almost always deleted.

PS: There is a S-10 GFI listed for sale on the Forum as we speak.

Based on about 20 sales I saw in the past 3 years, I'd say most of the used GFI S10 models normally sell for $1800-$2200. The SD10 and keyless models are slightly higher, due to their scarcity.

I agree with Donny's estimate, and would add that the Ultra's go a little higher than the Expo's. And they don't necessarily fly off the forum at those prices. Especially considering their initial price, I've always thought they were a pretty good deal used.

I currently own two GFI guitars, a SD-10 Ultra and a S-10 Expo-X1. I bought the Expo-X1, new, several years ago and the Ultra, used, a couple of months ago. They are great guitars. The S-10 Expo X1 is now my main gigging guitar and I really like it.

In terms of current value, knowing what I paid, I feel these guitars would sell used in the $2,200 to $2,400 range (Canadian Dollars), which translates approximately to $1,800 to $2,000 (American dollars).

I could actually be a little light on the dollar figure, but time will tell. My GFI guitars are well made, easy to play, easy to work on, and do not weigh a lot compared to others. I can see them holding their value over the years.
