I think I'm usually 2nd place, actually. Most pieces have clues in them to help with positioning. I hit the "Arrange" button often to get a fresh view of the remaining pieces.

Yep, there's a difference. My minds eye gets better at remembering where I saw 'that' piece. I see that I see more than I saw.

The familiar backdrop may help.

I've developed little nicknames for various puzzle piece shapes, so I remember what I'm looking for better now, like a "little headed, arrowhead up-left with a droop-wing right", etc.
