Jack: Sweet axe there--and for a fair price. Quick questions: What year is it? Does a case in good condition come with?

800?
mark, it is a great guitar, the case in a 9 out 10 condition. not sure of the year but i was told that it is a 60's year model. i bought this guitar to keep but then got an offer to buy a guitar that i owned years ago, so i need to let er ride. this photo was made with my cell so it is not enhanced.. it really as nice as it looks....
No ready yet!
Too bad--I'm struggling with my 8-String Fender Stringmaster non-pedal. Maybe in 2-3 years (if I'm lucky!).
Hope it works out. Try that FB page, too!

800s were introduced ca. 1964 and those squarish Schaller tuner buttons came in in late 1967 (Klusons before that). Early-'60s "spaghetti" logo on the frame is a mild curiosity, as is no decal--spaghetti or transition--on the pedal board. [Edit: Now I see it in the new pics.]
I have a dealer invoice from Fender for an 800 model with an 00038x serial number, date July of 1973. Steels were numbered separately from Teles, Strats, et al. and each model of steel may have had its own sequence.

Having run the (now closed) Fender steel website for many years I can say for certain that serial numbers are useless. Yes, they were different from Tele Strat etc serial number systems - but they weren't consistent within models or even within the line. They cover the gamut and not only are there duplications between models - there are duplications *within* models.Steels were numbered separately from Teles, Strats, et al. and each model of steel may have had its own sequence.
They can only be roughly dated based on features. As there are not price differences based on year and no huge "vintage value" factors" to consider the manufacturing dates are of curiosity value only. I tell those that seem overly concerned with dates to simply NOT worry about it.
No chops, but great tone
