I've mailed several copies of my last CD "The Unspoken Word" out to Forum members in the past 2 months. I woulk like to see if any of you can tell which guitars were used on the different tracks. Just for fun, or we can make some kind of a game out of it. The 2 guitars used were a '67 D-10 Emmons, and a Zumsteel D-10 Hybrid. No eq was used in the mixing to try to make them match. Only the eq from an Alembic tube preamp was used in recording along with a Black Box. So far only one person has answered to all the tracks correctly. That was my son, who wasn't here when I recorded them, nor does he play steel.

I'll give you a hint. Both guitars are rosewood.

Next time I see you Randy, I'll pick one up and listen for myself. That's an interesting sounding game.

It's the day of reckoning!!!
All of you super ear PP connie-sewers (with a set of guts) can prove your ears and become "honorary mousekateers". Post your ears for all to see! Miss one and you're out!
This is a good one!

I haven't heard the cuts, but; I think I know what to listen for. The tunes that were closest in tune were done on the ZUM! Oh! Nasty! Shut~Up John¡

First up to the plate to size up the pitch: Bobbe Sizemore
This wouldn't be fair if one guitar was black. Sorry, I'm profiling.

I want one of these. Is that the Hybrid you were playing at the NTSGA show a couple of weeks ago? The tone was dynamic.

Frank, yes that was a new SD-10 Hybrid. That pad is much easier on my forearms than those C6th strings.

Tony, not a guitar but maybe we can come up with something.

Dennis has given me an idea. The "Golden Ears" award. I can picture the trophy. Just imagine the bragging rights that would go along.

Hi! Randy: I have been a Zum player for years. Great guitar. You make the E-9th sound like a 6th neck. Do you hear much tone difference between the SD-10 and the D-10? Hope to see you in Norwalk. Where can I purchase your CD?

Hello Morton. The SD-10 has a Lawrence 710 while the D-10 has True Tone single coils. They sound different from each other. I can't say one is better or worse, only different. I hear things with the single coils I prefer, but I also hear things with the 710's I really like. My SD-10, for whatever reason, seems to "bark" a little more on strings 4 ,5, and 6. The D-10 has those "bells" right down to the 10th string. I did a session yesterday with the SD-10 and to me it recorded better, as to how it layed in the track while playing fills, intros, and turn arounds.

The CD "The Unspoken Word" along with my others are available from B0B here on the Forum. Or you can order from me at:

Randy Beavers
326 Knowles Rd.
Lebanon, TN 37090

Price is $15.00 plus $3.00 for shiping.

Just imagine how much better Buddy's "Blade" would have sounded if it were black.

If I recall, years ago, Maurice threw this challenge to the PP fanatics. And most, if not all failed.
Randy, maybe you could put 5 or 10 second sound bites of each tune on here? Let the Alfred E Neuman Golden Ear PP competitors post their results.

Ok Randy; I just received my "The Unspoken Word" CD from you and Judy. Thank you so much for sending it and your playing is just Absolutely Beautiful and inspiring my friend; as you probably already know>"I'm your biggest Fan"....You are amazing my Brother.
So in listening to EVERY track; I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was easy to pick out which is what...ha....(yeah right Ricky; your confidence is a little over-bearing..ha.).
Tracks 1;4;5;8;10 were played with the '67 Emmons and the rest were the Hybrid???
So am I right?? Am I close?? yeee haaaa.
Hey Folks GET this CD from Randy; as his playing is Flawless and Dynamic and Inspirational in Every Way.

Ah-Hem... After referring to my tracking sheet, that's a mighty valient effort. However... We'll let a few more tee the ball up before telling who stayed on the green, or rolled off in the water.

Funny, I've had some people guess who downright sh@nked it OB right! Sorry for the golf talk but I'm trying to get back in the groove of the game since I'm going to play tomorrow!

Who's next on the tee box? I should also mention I'm having a website built and there will be sound bites of the songs.

Using a putter in a sand trap?
I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot #1 driver.
