Drew,
Years ago, Paul answered this question on the forum. I tried my best to find the topic but was unable to do so.
Not to speak for him, but if I remember correctly, it was studio reverb mixed with a single 400ms delay. Maybe he will chime in to clarify.
I believe the album was released in 2004. It is definitely one of the best steel tones on record. |

I think Paul had his Awesome Pedal turned up to 11 on that one.

Quite different than Lloyd, and equally great.

And as to the effects, yes a bit of 400 ms delay but much of the effect is a smallish room Reverb done in mixdown. 400ms is relatively long for delay, more after effect than ambience.

I agree; I think the reason we notice it is that the small room effect makes the steel sound like it's in a different world from the rest of the record. I like the background vocals. |

The interesting thing about that intro is that the lines keep going when you think they might be over, but they are conceptualized and connected in a way that doesn’t feel crammed in or overplayed. I guess that’s what separates the players from the true artists. |
