I’ve got a lacquered S12 extended E9 4x5 that I’m thinking about posting up for sale. Anybody have any idea what a good price might be. There’s so few Kline’s that come up, and I haven’t seen any extended E9’s, so if anyone has any insights I’d appreciate it.
Thanks.

Why not auction it? A thing is worth what people are willing to pay.

I would let some experts weigh in,,,I would really hate to see the forum turn into fleabay.

If you price it high it will be apparent when you do not get many inquiries and you can adjust, or people will make offers..

Just my $.02

I'd start at $2800 and see what happens. Post lots of good pictures. You can always come down in price.

PS: I have no expertise in this matter, but then the guitar is so rare, I'm not sure anyone does.

It’s a Kline, so it will go to a specific kind of players who are looking for that type of guitar, also it depends on condition, and also out of all the models, the E9 ext is the least popular, more then likely guitar was originally U12 with 7+5 and then cut down to 4+5 ....but without seeing the pictures, is really pretty much impossible to guess anything...

fwiw, I bought a Kline S12U 7x5 for $750 in a local Vintage Shop last year.
I have since found they are hard to work on if you want to change the setup, and no parts are available (I had to fabricate some pull-rods).
Other than that it plays good and sounds nice.
You might put it on your local Craigslist and Music Store bulletin boards and sell to a local guitar player looking to dabble in Steel, for a price one can afford.
Otherwise you are packing, shipping, insuring, etc.
If you want someone to call and come over and check it out within 2 weeks or so, I am thinking, list on Craigslist for $900 and plan to take $750. You could double that and list it for $1800.
fwiw, A brand new Mullen Discovery with Industry Standard setup and add-on parts and tech service/support is $2295.

I’ll hopefully get some pics up on the weekend, once I shine it up a bit.
Not really an option to sell it locally, there’s not the market in Canada like in the US. Plus the exchange rate is unusually in my favour. I’m not in a hurry to sell, just getting some preliminary feedback.

Maybe someone in your extended family or friends would want to "take it on".

If you go to the Search function, and Search "Ext", and "All Posts", in the For Sale - Steel Guitars section, it will bring up all the Ext E9th Steels ever sold on the Forum.
Look at comparable guitars and this should help give you an idea of price range.
How come you want to sell it?
I would keep it and play it. Smile
fwiw I see this 12 string Sierra currently for sale, which is probably a good comparision.

Don't underestimate the va!ue of this guitar. I played a U-12 keyless for about 10 years and loved it.It sounded great and was small to carry. If I could turn back time, I would still be playing this guitar.

It is true that it would be a bear to change the set-up. It uses a single tree mechanical system unlike any other guitar that I have ever seen. It looks strange, but works great and stays in adjustment and in tune..
My estimate as to value would be $1800 - $2000.

This would make an awesome guitar for somebody looking for an S-10. They could either ignore the bottom two strings of just remove them completely.

I’d thought about keeping it, and the decision to sell isn’t based on whimsy. I’ve just come to the conclusion that it’s not the guitar for me. I would rather not go through the trouble of selling it, but it’s good timing, as a friend has loaned me another guitar.
There’s just a few qualities, purely subjective, that prevent me from truly enjoying playing it. My reasoning is that it’s best not to modify it to work for me, compromising its originality and saleability, and move on to another instrument.
They really are great guitars, but time to move on.
There isn’t much consistency in sale prices, and there haven’t been many lacquer Kline’s up for sale, that along with not having seen any extended E9’s is the reason I started this thread.
Thanks for the info/opinions so far.

Here is a Thread with many Kline owners:
https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=2720731#2720731

You might post your Kline for sale in that thread.
I think an existing Kline owner/collector will be the most likely buyer.
Can you post some pics?

With all due respect, the best place to post the guitar for sale is in the "For Sale: Steel Guitars" section. Klines are very high-quality respected instruments, even if a bit unknown. If you are willing to "let it ride" for a bit, someone will buy it. Price, of course, to be determined by the market. Take lots of pictures from every angle. Make it clear that you are open to reasonable offers, and I think you will find a buyer.

BTW, the only pedal steels I have ever played that I did not own were a Kline S10 and a ZB Student S10. I would have to say the Kline impressed me very much - short, easy throws on pedals and levers, and great tone!

I got a U-12 Kline about 8 months ago. I spent a good deal of time researching past Kline sales etc.

I bought this one for $2500:
https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=320500&highlight=

It was a mica 7x5 in really nice shape. I'd say yours has a a more valuable finish, but also has two less pedals...I'd think you are in the ballpark of $2500 (assuming it's in nice shape), but if it's a real beauty, the $2800 starting seems reasonable. I realize this is subjective, but I'm sure there is somebody looking for a kline right now and they don't come around that often so if you want max value don't start too low.

Would love to see some pictures!!! Very Happy

If you could get Rick Troyes to chime in, that would be great. He probably knows more about Kline guitars than anybody, of course that’s just my opinion.

I have a lacquer Kline, S12 uni that was owned and played by Jeff Newman on the 83 ISGA program, still set up exactly as Jeff had it. I wonder if that provenance would add to it's value?

As a Player I don't pay more just because an instrument belonged to someone famous, but I hear some folks do (collectors/historians?).
fwiw, I think Klines that come up for sale should go to Kline owners/fans who know how to work with them.
Modern Steels are alot easier to deal with so my recommendation is to go with an modern Brand unless it's a great buy or you just have to have it no matter price.
This pic of "How to tune your Kline at the End-Plate" is just one example of how Klines are more difficult to deal with than other S12U's I own.

As a former Kline owner, I can say that they are not that hard to work on. Not that much harder than modern all pull guitars. A whole lot easier than a Rack and barrel Sho~Bud, and definitely easier than a push pull. You do need to understand the mechanics, just like any guitar. If you wanted to remove a cross shaft, all you had to do is remove 2 screws that hold a little block that the cross shaft fits into. And the pull rods do through a little bushing with a set screw to hold it. And the other end is a hook that goes over a hook, and the rod goes through the endplate.

And tuning was easy.

And they have the best vertical knee lever ever. It was spring loaded and all you had to do is flip a lever and let it go into the bottom of the guitar. To use it, you just pull on it and it clips into place. Joe Kline was a genius. I still wish I had my Kline.

Great guitars my advice would be don't sell it!! If it was a 12 universal it would be worth between $2000-$3000. Depending on condition so I would say between $1500-$2000.

You can still get parts off Joe I bought $400 worth off him late last year.

They are difficult to work on but no harder than a push/pull in my opinion.

Here is one of mine.

If I was you I'd put it on eBay. I had a set of 1951 Harley gas tanks in pretty good shape, with the emblems and put them up for 5 grand (no, I wasn't in a hurry to sell them either). About every other month I'd go down $500.00. They eventually sold for $2000.00 - I paid $600.00 for them. It took about 5 months. If you're not in a hurry, time is on your side and you can wait to find the same guy I did - the guy who just couldn't live without it.

What Richard said!!! There so many subtle, ingenious details in a Kline that a book could be written on the subject. Those VKL's should go down in history as one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. I have S-10 white mica and a D-10 black mica. Both still have the original pickups....need I elaborate? I am in awe as to their mechanical accuracy and just how repetitive they are.
