Orange Zum

Post by Don Mogle »

Hey Jerry,

Can you tell me about the evolution of different pickups on this guitar? Previous pictures show single coils originally and then it was changed to the alumitones (spelling ?). I'm sure it sounded great with the SCs. Where you going after something different tonewise?

Also, I've heard some people prefer the sound of these early 80s Zums. I believe Bruce made a change to the changers sometime around 2000.

Thanks,

Don

It's just tinkering, Don.

I had acquired these AT's through trades etc. over time, so I put them in a couple years ago. They sound good, they're noiseless and they look good too.

I think the guitar sounds like the guitar no matter which pickups I've had in it. Differences are subtle in certain frequency ranges. These AT's have more volume, but that's probably because they sit closer to the strings due to their height.

This is the only Zum I've owned, so I don't know how it compares to other eras or other models. It does play easy though and it sounds very good.

To save me from half a day packing and rounding up packing materials, etc.: Pick it up here or I'll drive up to 100 miles to meet a verifiable established forum member in the region.

Jerry, to me, that orange vinyl is a turn-off. Especially since you disclosed that it's got some issues. How hard would it be to remove it and go back to the original mica? Goo-Gone? I ask because this guitar should sell for $3500+-.

The issues are not much at all. I just wanted to make sure they were disclosed. Most mica finishes have as many flaws.

If you read the link to the covering job, you will see that I stated the vinyl can just peel off and the mica can be wiped down with ordinary rubbing alcohol to remove any minor residue if there is any. Easy job. It is sandwiched under the necks, but a hobby knife should take care of that.

Each to his own, but I like the orange vinyl a lot better than the faux wood grain mica under it.

It's a nice old axe...well worth the price and I'm not going to beg anybody to buy it. It really shouldn't be an issue, but if someone demands it, I will remove the vinyl but only after payment has been made and the funds transferred.
