| I don't know much about this stuff. Is it reasonable to think I could buy several small inexpensive tracking devices to keep track of my gear in case it goes missing? |

Brett, I haven't looked into this personally, so take what I say with a grain of salt: I suspect that you're correct in the devices themselves being fairly cheap. However I imagine the limiting factor would be the cost of some sort of subscription based service such as LoJack (though I think they only do vehicles) to be able to view the location of your equipment.

They are available. Some weeks ago a criminal network from Poland was raided by police. The criminals were bagged after they had traveled to Sweden to steal a number of motor boat engines. One of the engines had a hidden transceiver inside.  |

| I would think this is feasible with the hardware and technology today. Track it with a smart phone. I see ads for small "trackable" devices. |

My cat has a little tracking chip,so I'm guessing that it's similar?

Stu, the chips used for pets are passive until the scanner/reader is passed over them in close proximity.
The OP needs an active device that broadcasts its location in GPS coordinates, or in some kind of location beacon.

There are small stick-on devices you can buy that can be used to try to track things later. They require a subscription. I don't remember the names but if you Google the subject you should be able to find the info.

| I've seen one advertised on FaceBook lately that is very small, costs about $50, no subscription and talks back to a smart phone. Has an internal lithium battery. |

Bluetooth has a fairly short range. Maybe 200 to 300 feet.
