Condolences to the family and friends of Fred. The closest I came to meeting him was via his tablature which was outstanding.

Another piece of bedrock for the steel guitar community chipped away.
I first became aware of him in the late 70's from his transcription of Four Wheel Drive and Flint Hill Special. Through the years it never failed to amaze me to continue to see his name associated with top notch tab projects.
Condolences to his family.

I got to jam with Fred on several occasions in Hamburg Pa. I didn't know him too well until recently thanks to Russ Hicks. I called Russ to ask I'm how he played the Steel break on "The Girls all get Prettier at closing time". Russ gave a bit of insight and then said to call Fred for a chart. I did call him and we had a great conversation about many things. He sent me the chart a day or so later. He will certainly be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to know him.
It was heart-breaking to hear this ... ...
Another Buffalo, New York area friend here. Fred was a true friend to everyone, and was always more than willing to help other musicians. Fred spent alot of time personally guiding me through my C6th steel guitar learning venture. I was once trying to learn a Hoagy Carmichael tune and having a very hard time with it. I asked Fred for some guidance, and he tabbed out the whole song - note for note for me. He had an incredible ability for specifics, and there was never a more generous person. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are now with Fred's family. We all lost a great friend of the steel guitar community. Rest In Peace my friend. You will be sadly missed.
