Topic: Care of my lap steel between practice sessions |

| Just picked up a Recording King off of CL and I want to keep it accessible between practice periods. Do I position it upright or keep it horizontal when not in use? Or does it even matter? We have no kids/critters to mess with it. Thanks! |

Collects more dust lying down. Other than that, I see no other reason to worry about it.

Jack...No critters @ this time. BTW...some lap steels do look like a fire hydrant!

Put a cloth over it when not in use.
Then wipe off strings before and after practice.

Musical instruments, across the board, survive better in the case when they're not being played. No dust, no rust, no bumps.
But leaving them out removes one more impediment from playing any time you have time. |

I agree with Ken, you need to have your guitar at hand so if you have a few minutes to spare, you can do some picking.
I put my guitar away for some time and it scared me when I finally got it out how much I'd forgotten. |

I generally wipe the instrument, strings, and metal tuner buttons with
a flannel cloth, and place a towel over the instrument, if I plan to play
it again in the next day or two. If I don't plan to play it again in the near
future, I de-tune, wipe down, and replace it in the case.

Multiple steels and some not being played for years. Wow. 
I'd rather have one. It forces me to always use it cause it's all I got.

It's a frickin' lap steel... a piece of wood with strings on it. Put it where you'll play it the most often... definitely not in the case, that's where instruments go to die, plus did I mention it's just a hunk of wood?
