Ronald's post made me think: are there any of you that have steels that are past the point of wanting to be rebuilt? A couple of us flat feet--Giorgio Rubino and myself--are interested in the compass but not necessarily the pedals.
We'd be happy to take them off your hands.

Charlie I can recommend a basket case man.These are pretty easy to rebuild.And fun to work on.You just need the machinery and patience.I am working on a brand new cabinet for mine.Using hard maple for this one.It will be a Laquer body with black and white inlays.Convert it to a 3x4.I would like a 4x5 but I can't find someone with a spare wide pedal.
I will put an aluminium neck on it that is half as thick as a normal neck.

All parts will be polished mirrorlook.All and all it will cost me some but not nearly as much as a new steel guitar.

I would say....go for it.
