I tried a set of Frenchys steel mill strings a while back and really liked them. I'm thinking seriously about switching to them completely in the very future. Anybody got any comments on the steel mill strings? Positive or negative, doesn't matter. I'd like to see what some other pickers think. |

I'm not real picky about strings, but I do require them to last since I buy each gauge by the dozen. I really don't think there's a whole lot of difference in the plain strings, from brand to brand, so I look for good quality for a good price. Frenchy packages his plain or stainless or nickel wound strings by the dozen and the price is excellent. I use his stainless strings, with the exception of the biggest one -- I use a 079CW GeorgeL for that one.
I haven't tried the nickel strings, but I really like Frenchy's stainless wound and his plain strings.

I've used Frenchy's strings for years. They're good strings and Frenchy is a good guy to deal with. Fast turnaround on orders, too.

I also have an endorsement for Frenchy's strings. You can get them in nickel or stainless. believe me, in 62 years of playing steel guitar, I have tried a lot of brands, but Frenchy's strings are the best I have used. Jody. |

I have been playing around with strings lately. For me it's good to find out as much as you can about differences is tone and sustain and then pick the one that best suites "my" ear. There are some slight differences that I have found in some of the strings I have tried and some I simply could not hear a difference. Frenchy sent me a set of his "silent wound" strings. A set in Stainless and a set in Nickle. I have installed and played the stainless strings and found them, in my opinion, to have a warm tone quality, that apparently is pleasing to the ear of others, as I play and been told the tone was great. The "silent wound" aspect, virtually eliminates bar noise and actually feels smoother for me as I make longer slides. The higher notes especially beyond the 12th fret are sweet and appealing to the ear. All in all I have had more compliments on my "tone" with this set of strings than at any other time. Is it just by chance??? I guess you have to make that call yourself. Now for the Ole Coot that turned me on to the string (Just Kidding you Frenchy). Frenchy is a great guy who's been around a long time and is not only a great player himself but he's always trying to help others and "that" is what makes him a great guy, and someone you would want to do business with.
Ray
PS
I will be slipping on a set of the Nickle strings this week because you never know what you're missing till you try something. Heck, I might be switching to nickle. [This message was edited by Ray Walker on 20 May 2005 at 03:41 AM.] |

I use the nickel Silent Series . These strings are semi- flat wound and give you the brillience of a round string plus the playing ease of a flat wound. I will be putting on a new set Monday to use at the OSGA Show in Tulsa. Jody. |
