Check Ebay for keyboard stands. They make very good steel guitar stands also.

I have a little black folding table that Walmart sells for $15. It is adjustable and will go low enough to play a steel on it, and there is room left for a song book, or even a tabletop easel and book. I put a little of the non slip rubber matting stuff (also from Walmart) and it protects the guitar and keeps it from moving. It also folds completely up for carrying.
