Report: SE Texas Steel Guitar Club Meeting/Jam, Katy, TX

Post by Jim Saunders »

We had a great meeting/jam today with our featured player, Jody Cameron, a recent inductee into the Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. Jody dazzled us with some swing, jazz, and country standards on his D10 Emmons
PP. Also in the jam were: Mark Everson on fiddle and vocals; Bobby Keith on drums; Billy Phelps on lead guitar and vocals; Patty Phelps on bass; Larry Schoppe on bass and vocals; David Hubenak on a Mullen D10; Doug Elverud on guitar and vocals; Ron Toth on a D10 Infinity; Janet Lynn Wise on a D10 Mullen; Jim Saunders on rhythm guitar; and vocals by Willie Funderburg, and Preston Brown.

We will not meet in July. Next meeting will be in August.

I had a ton of fun today. Thanks to the club for having me in to play. I wish I could make more of these meetings. These are a great group of guys and gals that put this on. Thanks to Billy and Patti Phelps for all their hard work and for all the folks that came to the show today. A BIG thanks to Larry Schoppe for learning my quirky material in a short time. Larry is a steel players bass man...always knows the tunes.

Thanks for the kind words, Jody! I consider it an honor to be asked to play bass with a musician of your stature. I had a great time.

Bob, It was good to see you there! I know you have had some serious medical issues, including the new knee. Glad you made the effort to come.

FYI, I talked with Jody about his amp and set up. He told me he was using a Fender Twin Custom with a 15" speaker. (not sure which). And, he doesn't use any effects. Just the reverb on the amp. And, what a tone!

6/4 meeting

I enjoyed the meeting on Sunday. I wanted to thank Billy and Patty for their hospitality.
It was my first time to attend, wonderful group!
It was good to meet other forum members and to see some of my old friends.
Great music by all!
What a pleasure to meet and listen to Jody Cameron. His command of the instrument and ability to so effectively do the C6 voicing on the E9th neck was very impressive, and such a down to earth guy!

Hats off to SE Texas Steel Guitar Club!

Was my first meeting also, and was super impressed by the musicianship and kindness of everyone. For someone new to the steel guitar world, very inspirational!

John, it's great to have you and your date. Yes, it is a friendly group and everyone is willing to share ideas and licks. Come again, come often. The steel world needs younger people to carry on. Many of us are a bit long of the tooth.
