I think the best thing for a new popularity of steel guitar was that sho bud on the "portland" song by Loretta Lyn with Jack from the white stripes. It was played on MTV and on 60 min. and on CMT.

I'm sure a lot of you have no idea how big the white stripes are. If it were mid 60's right now,they would be as big a the Kinks or even the WHO but not the stones or the beatles. And just think of the the respect for classic country that Jack is giving and passing on to a whole troupe of 20 year olds. He is helping to make it cool to like old country and the new versions of old country.It may seem small but it was only little known small bands like Royal Crown Review and Mighty Blue kings(swing bands) that made it into some movies and radio from underground popularity that taught a million people that swing existed and was worth a listen. And many of those people were very young and will appreciate it until they die.

Let's hope for more help from people like Jack.

(I didn't say the steel playing was amazing in that video it was just up front and obvious with a bit of a modern twist, but it was a SHO BUD.)

You all should try playing in New York, virtually everytime I play I am asked what the heck that thing is. It's especially amusing to hear audience members discussing among themselves how the steel works (lots of pointing and gesturing). Even though I am tired of explaining how it works, as most people won't know what the hell a slant or harmonized scale is anyway, I always do, since I am grateful to them for even caring. My fiancee calls it the walker, or ironing board depending on her mood.

You guys are killing me with this thread so funny!

I like the story that Maurice Anderson told the other week when he was at Jims opening. About a fan that sat and watch him play all night, at the end of the night the man got up and said I have that thing all figured out. All you have to do is pick a few strings and slide that steel thing back and forth to make music.Most people DONT HAVE A CLUE what it takes or what it is.
Some times when I go out to eat Ill wear a T shirt that says E9+C6>E=mc 2. When asked I tell them what it is, they say back Oh that old county guitar.Most people you talk to think that the great sound we like comes from the lead guitar play
