I recently saw Joan Baez playing with some new type of finger picks-I got online and found out they are called the Alaska Pik-They amaze me!They kinda wrap around your finger very well and fit underneath your fingernail-It definitely helps to file or trim them-they come in Brass or Plastic-I ordered large and that was perfect for me the plastic ones seemed a little smaller-the beauty of them is they do not get in your way and leave the tabs of your fingers for chiming! They take a little getting use to especially on the index finger but I can already play faster etc plus you can use a combination of brass and plastic and I am wearing one on my third finger which is awkward with the old style-some people might not like these but-I love them-can't wait to try them on Banjo!! Let me know what you think--A very snug, light comfortable, free feeling fit.I ordered 3brass and 3 plastic- from elderly instruments-I don't know if anyone has covered this yet on the forum.

I use these all the time. I have posted in the pedal section several times on these when the topic of playing with your own nails comes up. These are the best for guys who like the feel of the nail and that type of attack on the string. A much smoother sound than that of the metal pick going "clink" at the attack of a note.

Some drawbacks. They wear out so you have to have a spare on hand. Also you have to do a bit of work to trim them correctly to fit your style.

I have not tried the brass ones yet, but I will after reading your post.

In regards to Joan Baez, I played guitar with her on a concert here in Atlanta years ago. Right after the Marine barricks bombing in Lebanon. She made the statement that she wished that more had been killed. Her politics totally suck, but she had a Grit Laskins 000 size Martin copy that sounded so incredible. She did Lennons "Imagine" and sounded nice. Wouldn't say whether or not she did the wild thing with him--rumours abound. Also she did an imatation of Bob Dylan that was better than Dylan. I digress.

I bought two sets of these and they did not work out well for me. I could never get used to feel of them under my nails. Very uncomfortable in my opinion. YMMV.

These picks might not suit everyone but I love them and the brass ones get more of the metallic sound-

Grant-maybe your just too PICKY !!!-Seriously some players might be sensitive under the nail-that is where the pick fits-for years I played with finger nails because I held my regular guitar in my lap and would switch back and forth-but my nails kept breaking-these are also excellent with acoustic guitar-I still have to try them on Banjo

UH HUH, I've been using them for about 5 yrs.
The omly real problem I had, was you have to have nails long enough to support them. My nails are always breaking, so I taped them on to keep them from slipping off the end of my finger. But now I'm doing something else that works great.GET YOUR TORCHES READY..Fake nails..Now the Alaska Pics work just fine..The fake nails support the picks, and they never slip. My sister looked at me kinda funny when she noticed them..I just told her it was this or body peircing.

PaPa. Be careful with those fake nails. The superglue that you use to glue them on will tear off the top layer of your own nail if your not careful. Also you have to take them off after certain period of time to keep fungus and other nasty stuff from attacking your nails.

Pa Pa--What color nail polish do you use-Lip Stick Red? After going back and forth-I decided to use the traditional Dunlop on my index finger and a brass Alaska pic on my second finger-that way I can still chime easier and it does not get in my way as much-I guess after listening to you guys maybe I ought to take a trip to the Beauty shop!
