I know this is an impossible question to answer, but I have such great expectations from this forum: If Fenders "sing"; Magnatones "whine"; Nationals "growl" & Ricks "roar"- then would you describe the sound of the Gretsch?

The Gretsch will "kvetch".
(that means complain)

Oy Howard- did I leave myself open for that one!

Anyways, Brad's page of steel says Gretsch lapsteels were all made by Valco & I know (and like!) the sound of the Valco string-through jobs, but this axe has a pickup that looks like a "soap bar". Can anybody compare this Gretsch to a guitar that I know- or THEY know for that matter!

The other Gretsch models of the period are essentially Supros with a few cosmetic differences, and have the string-through Supro pickup. These Jet Twins have their own pickups, which I suspect are not made by Valco (they also have Gretsch guitar knobs and heavy metal bridge covers unlike any other Valco-made instrument I know of). The only one I've played had ancient strings, so it was hard to judge the sound very clearly, but it didn't strike me as being at all like that of an under-string Valco (i.e. National)
pickup. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was similar to the current Gretsch repro. models.
Pleasant, but a little thin, certainly nothing spectacular. A very collectable instrument, though.

Thank you Ian. I very much value your opinion. I personally like the sound of the string-through Valco pickups, so I think I'llpass on this axe.

Hey Ian! I'll be jammin with the Don Valley Boys tomorrow night in TO- one night only. I'll think of you...

"T.O." - now there's something that won't have much meaning for most people south of the border! Nice time to be here, the weather's beautiful right now. Where'll you be playing?

Ian...those pickups are similar to the pickups found in the old HARMONY steel guitars...right ? I was never impressed
by them.
