It's a keeper! This is one fine steel guitar.
I bought the Blue Maple Mullen from Hugh Jackson, forum member. This guitar fits me better than any I've ever had.The stock pups sound great, it plays just as smooth as the Zum I had, and this Blue Maple mica makes it one beautiful instrument. I'm keepin this one. Thanks to Del and Mike and all at the Mullen guitar co. for makin a great guitar, and thanks to Hugh for givin me a great deal!

Congratulations Terry. I also have a Mullen. I bought it new from Billy Cooper's Music in 1995. The guitar still looks new and plays and sounds great. |

Ha Ha!! i've done it a few times untill I see another one that I just have to try and then I give up something to get it that I wish I would have kept .anyway I saw a picture of the one you bought and it sure is a beauty!!!! |

Way to go TW Know you have been considering a Mullen for sometime now.The first time I set down to a Mullen was at the ISGC in 2003, knew then I just had to have one.The lever and pedal action are as smooth as silk.Different as day and night from my old Bud.With a fresh set of strings the tone is awesome!

There's something about those '95 Mullen guitars (pre-RP). They are fast becoming a classic collectable for their tone and pedal smoooooothness. BTW Lee, a very knowledgable source told me the pre-RP changers are really a much better design. That person couldn't understand why Del felt the need to make the design change.

I've played both, the Herby Wallace model and the Royal precision. Both play extremely smooth, but there is a tone difference. Most of the ones I've talked to that had the pre RP model changed pickups, to get the tone they wanted. I don't think there's a pickup of any kind that will make my Mullen sound better than the stock pups Del put on it.

You hit the nail on the head Terry. There is just nothing better than that stock Royal Precision pickup. IMHO. And the playability, well they all have to try one to see what I mean. |

I don't know about the P-ups shipped on the RP, but the ones on my '95 sound great!
The only small drawback is that the Mullen PU's (hand wound) are single-coil and not humbuckers. For technical/recording reason's ONLY I swapped the E9 PU for an E-66. No hum, but it sure doesn't sound as good as the stock '95 PU.
Anybody got any suggestions? Perhaps I'll call Del and ask them. Best, -Dave

In my experience, I believe the best humbucker pickup is the Geroge L 10-1. The E-66 is ok, but I think the 10-1 sounds much better. Del would also agree with me about this. Stock is the best, but the single coil does have that humm. [This message was edited by Mike Mantey on 11 March 2005 at 09:24 AM.] |

After recieving and playing my new Mullen in 10/03, i decided that i wanted to change the tone somewhat. Instead of going to a different brand / kind of p/u ,i asked Del if he would wind me a p/u for the E9 that would be wound like the one he installed on Buck Grantham's Mullen ; he obliged, i returned the original p/u and now all is well. However, now that i have been doing some demo recording with a friend of mine, i'm considering a Humbucker for the E9. A Mullen picker friend of mine recommends the LXR 16 for a great tone, but i've never heard one on a steel. So i'll stick with the one that Del sent me, which has a great tone anyway. My advice is describe to Del what you're wanting to hear and let his expertise kick in. --------best wishes,
Skip
