I was wondering how many players are using ear monitors and which brand do you use or prefer?

I use Westone UM-2s. I can't say I like them as I consider them tone-suckers but they are reliable. I'm obliged to use them on two regular gigs that I do.

In ear monitors are the industry standard among professional musicians for good reason. They sound better. But like any other audio electronics, they vary widely in price and performance. In ear monitors also rely heavily on the quality of the signal that is sent to them from the PA, which implies good equipment and somebody who knows how to run it. The headphones that you choose is also a significant factor.
Bottom line, do the research. But don't bother if you're not prepared to spend some serious money. You can't expect high end results from low end gear. Expect to pay $600-800 for a good system with one body pack, like Shure PSM 200 or 300 and $300 or more for good, custom moulded earphones. Going low-buck is a waste of time and money an you're better off sticking with floor wedges or Hot Spots. But make no mistake, nothing beats a good set of in ear monitors once you get used to them and get them dialed in right.

Drew - I have had some good recommendations for better quality IEMs and really should pull the trigger. The regular sound guy at my Summer gig is good so any dearth of quality in my IES.
I'm 74 now so I need to consider a big outlay at this late stage but I know you're right.

Roger, I'm 71 and need IEMs now more than ever. Blew my ears out in clubs with floor wedges in front and Fender amps behind for way too many years. I also wear hearing aids now, which I take out when using the IEMs. But I generally just use the IEM in one ear and leave the hearing aid in the other. Takes some getting used to and some adjustments, but well worth the effort.

| A wired system is not near as expensive as a wireless system and better than nothing. My IE10s were about a buck and custom ear molds were a buck and a half and a one channel HP amp and cords is about 75$. Some times I put them in with no feed just to kill the SPL....... just my $.0015 LOL |

Dale, I used to use this setup and it was great and less expensive than the big name brands. I sold it when I quit playing out as much. Now when I do play out I use a Walker preamp which has a separate headphone out and I use a set of headphones or ear buds to where I can still hear the band but hear myself clearly over the "lead" drummer, bass player, and fiddle player sometimes.

Any danger of a feed back that could blow your ears out, or is there some safety built in?

I use the Carvin Em-900 transmitter and receiver which works pretty well. I did change to the Westone UM Pro 30 earbuds which made a huge improvement in sound quality.
