I am enjoying my MSA maple guitar.. a LOT!!..I am going to do some cool custom pickup work on it and would like the input of all my friends here.. This guitar has the MSA Supersustain bucker.. It is a good pickup,but I feel it is a bit limited.. Many years ago I had one of these custom rewound on a white Mica MSA, Isolating both coils.. giving a choice of front,back or both coils activated.. It was a TERRIFIC set up.
Now,, I would like to take this a bit further on this guitar.. I was thinking of having the coils isolated and tapped.. This would give the flexability of either coil full.either coil tapped,or both coils full or tapped... this would give 6 possible combinations...
Also I have discussed a set up with Jerry Wallace for him to make me a TrueTone W/ 3 way coil tap,giving me.3 different combinations... I currently have a Wallace TrueTone,w/a two way coil tap and it is beautiful...
What are you guys thinking,and which would you choose?? .. I am leaning more toward the highly modified MSA Supersustain,because I LIKE the idea of switching back and forth between single and dual coil sounds,and SIX tonal variations at the flick of a switch!!
I am also considering a GeorgeL 10-5 which is a real nice 5 way pickup,but I am not sure if I can still get one.. anyway, where would you go with this??.. It WILL have some sort of coil tap set up,but I am still on the fence.. I DO respect and take to heart ALL opinions I get here...let me know which sounds like the cooler idea... bob |

Hi Bob,
Don't mean to sidetrack your thread, but I couldn't respond to your other post before it was closed.
In that post you talked about your problems with not being able to hear your steel when you turned it down as far as the "don't play chords" guy wanted you to. Been there...and found out a solution. The speaker is the key, not the tone, or the guitar.
JBL's are notorious for projecting their sound past the player where it then blows the audience away. I had the same exact problem as you. So, for such gigs, I switched out my JBL (then later, my Black Widow) with a high power standard 15". I could then hear just fine, and no more "you're too loud" complaints.
JBL's cone's, in particular, are flatter than most other speakers. The sound gets past you, but the crowd gets blasted. It has to do with the cone's angles. A standard speaker cone has a steeper angle, thus the sound is more focused and can be more easily aimed where you want it.
Just wanted to toss this out to you.....

Bob,
I still have one of those George L 5 way (12 string) pickups sitting around the house somewhere. It had some nice sounds which were fine while playing around the house but the power level of each was so different that I doubt it would have worked well playing live. I had the same experience with my coil tapped Pro III many years ago as well as with some electric guitars I used to use on stage. In general I don't think coil taps are a very useful idea but you seem to already be happy with one so go for it and see what you get. |
