I've been experimenting with tunings and string pulls lately. Looking for Country twang sounds. Here's what I came up with.

Very cool, Doug - sounds great!

I've been working on this version of "Teach Your Children" by Martin Gross - he gives that 2nd string a good tug (he's got it tuned down a full tone from std dobro tuning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC-N4zl1QZo

Thanks for the kind comments. The main feature of this tuning is the "string 1 pull" to the third of the chord, like the sound of a pedal steel guitar, pedals A & B, and then rocking on and off pedal A. That's the signature twang sound IMO. That's also what Martin Gross is doing in his dobro video, pulling into the third of the chord, different tuning though.

Good work and nice country sound Doug.
I note you're using the mid finger with the ring finger
as a helper on those 1st string pulls?? Gauge 014 for the top string (D) maybe?? That's another helper.
I like the little Gibson too!

Thanks all. Yes, I'm using two fingers for the 1st string pull. String 1 is .014, tuned to D. This tuning is a re-tune from C6, so the .014 on string 1 works well... less tension when tuned to D.

Wow....just great playing. I find it amazing how you just try new tunings and sound like you've been playing in them for years.

Thanks, Stephan. I spent a couple of hours playing the tuning before making the video. With any new tuning, I explore the intervals of the open strings, the root, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, etc. and learn the chord positions. I also search for convenient licks and patterns within the tuning. Practicing to a band-in-a-box track is extremely helpful because you can hear what licks work over what chords. A lot of this is playing by ear and hearing what works and what doesn't. I recorded about five takes of the video and kept the best one. You don't want to see the other ones! Winking
