Recently came across this neat vintage tone bar.

Reminds me of someone's idea of a better mouse trap.

It fits nice and tight to your finger and really is impossible to drop.

Were tone bars like this ever popular back in the day?

Cool. It even has volume and tone knobs.

An interesting reinvention of the 'wheel'.

How does one propose performing forward and reverse
bar slants in order to keep a smooth flow of the melody line?

I thought I'd seen everything. Even though it's impractical, it's AWESOME

Ray, to do slants, you need to be "sideways double jointed"... Very Happy

I get a kick out of all the old cool attempts at the proverbial better mousetrap. Right or wrong, its a neat piece of history.

Since it's a good bet that the person who invented this bar is long gone I guess this qualifies as a rhetorical question. Wink

Cool, I've never seen that one. We've seen other vintage bars with finger clips, grips, supports. Unfortunately those devices take away more than they add to a player's sound. A player needs to roll, swivel, and slant the bar. Clips and grips inhibit that.

I know a dobro player who jb welded two hose clamps to the ends of an old stevens steel the same way. Think he lost his grip or dexterity. He slides his finger in and tightens them down, lol. Good contemporary style player, but he doesn't seem to do many slants.

I find slants rather fun myself.

When ever I see these awkward devices, I think of Billy Hew Len, and what he was able to do with the ultimate.

That bar reminds me of that Chinese thing where you put your finger in and then can't get it out! Whoa!

I'm thinking Mark Roeder could make a Swivel for his stands.

Ya, that would be like . . . let me think . . . a better mousetrap! Let's keep this thread going. It could get quite ridiculous.

I wonder if the patent ever got approved. It says on the box "patent applied for". Maybe could've bought this on a Hawaiian infomercial. Very cool item.

Speaking of oddball bars, remember these classics?
