let me ask it this way:

which one is most like the ZUMM?

do ya'll the ZUMM is better or what?

i am not fast player, i like sustain and like a penetrating single coil sound usually. smooth pedals, string return and tuning is key to me, not so much speed. the Serria i used to own was the stiffest pedals i ever felt and was hard to stay in tune.

later,

Billy, I've never played a Derby(love their tone though) but I have played a Mullen, 1994
model, and it pedaled really smooth. I think the Zum and Mullen guitars are very similar as far as playabillity.

I've had a Zum and a Mullen.
They are both top of the line guitars.
Very close in action, and both sound great.
I chose to play the Mullen, just my choice.

Jerry.

I've owned both a ZumSteel and a Mullen and I don't play either any more. Both are great guitars, but I believe that ALL the pedal steel guitars made today are well built, play smoothly, and sound great. You won't get anybody else to tell you what YOU like best. You will just have to listen, try, buy, and experiment before you will find the guitar that sings your song. Just because I play Emmons and Fessenden doesn't mean that those brands will ring your chimes. Of the hundreds of steel players I know, not a single one is playing the first guitar they bought. What you like today will not necessarily be what you like tomorrow.

There is no best guitar. IMHO.

Derby! I have one and have been fully satisfied. I can't attest to the Mullen. They are obviously great guitars, or there wouldn't be so many being played. I mdid have a good friend and great player who said he was going to sell his Mullen's and get a Derby. Does that mean the Derby is better? No! It means that he and I both like the Derby. You need to play both and choose the one that feels and sounds the best to you. Good Hunting!

Will somebody answer me this? are the newer model Emmons, say, 1995 and newer, easier to pedal than the older models, like the Legrand short keyhead?
