Yeah, with regard to Sutherland, I agree that great backup makes it tolerable. But I have heard worse singers, even on large stages. There have been fairly mediocre popular music singers over decades who have been saved by great backup. History of this in Nashville and elsewhere, IMHO. No names need to be mentioned. There are also lots of just flat-out great country singers. Every genre has greats, not-so-greats, and even not-very-good-at-all.
I believe Richards really likes country music, and I really don't think he is at all trying to make a mockery of it. He's not a country singer - I mean, really, he's mainly a rock and roll guitar player, not a singer at all. But he does sing some - not saying anybody should like it, but some people do. But I think expecting him to be a good country singer would be like expecting a classical violin player to be able to sing opera well. OK, maybe some can, but I'll bet most cannot. I think the difference is that in classical music, they'd never give someone who can't sing opera well a chance to do it in a mainstream public show. But in "Show-Biz", any star can do practically anything they want if it's their show. And if people show up and pay money to see and hear it, well there you go.

| I think Mr. Haggard set an impossibly high bar, but the songs he wrote and the songs he made famous are too beautiful to leave out of our vocal tradition. I hope people with huge fanbases and campfire amateurs alike keep passing them on, rough or not. Also, I love the country-type music that the Stones did, but when I heard Keith Richards talk about thinking that Gram Parsons was only spoofing country music, my heart sunk. His tone suggested, to me, that he needed convincing that country music was a serious art form. |
