I am going to let the cat out of the bag so to speak, now that I have permission to do so. The Marrs Cat Can has been totally redesigned by Duane Marrs and Marvin Fluger of Fluger Hollowneck Resonators. The new Cat Cans have a Dobro Simulator Circuit now built right into the guitar. They are also being made with bodies of highly flamed maple
with stained finishes in any color desired. The bodies are also covered in what Marvin Fluger is calling Dura-Finish. Its a high gloss polyurethane hard body finish for durability. The one that I saw was LDG green(original stain formula) with a white fret board.
Its highly ding resistent and the finish never fades or cracks, unlike lacquer. Looks like a candy apple its so glossy. The new CatCan sounds exactly like a dobro with the simulator circuit engaged. There is also a switch on the guitar to turn off the simulator to play lap steel. Like the old model, the guitar is made to comfortably fit right on the top of the steel for easy use. It has a felt covered bottom to protect the steel and keep the Cat Can firmly in place on top of the steel. Also, the new guitars have Sho-Bud style white or black fret boards. The new Cat Can looks incredibly cool sitting on top of the steel.
Duane will be putting pictures up on his web site in the next thirty days. One was just played at the NTSGA Superjam and you will start to see this unit being played in the field very soon. Thanks Kevin, and yes our keyhead will accommodate up to 8 strings. We began sorting hardware yesterday to mill and send to the polishers. New interest has been overwhelming and the electronics have made the most significant change. Still the very road worthy Cat-Can it always was.
Just a little history for those who don't know. The late Jeff Newman coined the phrase "Cat-Can" since we settled on the cat food can for the best resonator sound, with help from Tommy White and others. Marrs RGS or resonator guitar simulator is how it is patented.
Tommy Spurlock used it on lots of the early Highway 101 recordings, I believe 6 sides on the first album. Larry Sasser used it on Nashville Now, Gary Morse with many artists and Gary Carter used it live with Randy Travis on "Forever and Ever,Amen" once on Saturday Night Live.

I got number 000022 back in 87 as a gift from my step son. Can you update this guitar with the new electronics and would it make a significant difference?
I remember seeing all of those Cal Can cat food cans in a big pile over at Duanes back then and he showed me what he was working on. He's got a bunch of cats and probably will never run out of them. |
