Hello,
I am a total newbie. I've played slide guitar and lap steel for years, but never a pedal steel.
I've been lurking here for a while so I decided to join.
I am looking for a starter instrument to begin learning (I posted an ad in the WTB Forum).
I split the year between Seattle and my home in Dublin Ireland. I was hoping to find a teacher in Seattle or perhaps someone could recommend some decent videos?

Hi JC, welcome to the forum.
I think if you find the teacher all the rest will fall into place.
Take a lesson even if you haven't got a steel yet.
Believe me you will be THINKING about it a lot,
and why waste time if your gonna do it.

Well, I was -in- Drogheda (Droch Eada) at some point in October, but I take it there was some sort of concert there? If so, I was -not- there.  What was it?

JC,
If at all possible,find someone that has some expertise in PSG to help you, and get a decent used pro guitar. It will be easier to sell,if you decide not to persue the instrument, also will keep you from losing $$ when you get the "hots" for sumpin better,which you will. S10,3+4, or D10, 8+5.
, or maybe S12 uni.

I am not sure if Dan Tyac gives lessons but you could look him up on the SGF he lives up in seattle somewhere.

I know there is somebody actively teaching up in Lynnwood, WA but I can't for the life of me find his name or email address. I know that doesn't help much, but maybe somebody else can come up with the missing information.
You might consider posting a message with the subject "PSG teacher in Seattle area?" or something like that.
If you get down to Portland I'd be happy to give you a few pointers, anyway.

WELCOME!!! There's a real good teacher here in S.C., but I don't guess that's much help 
I think you'll find that most folks here will go out of their way to help, but a real live teacher is a MUST for pedal steel. And, to echo what my friend Bill Ford said, I'd stay away from "student" type instruments. You should be able to pick up a good S-10 for around 1000.00, and if you don't like the instrument, sell it right back here on the Forum!
And as Dave said, it's a wild ride! |
