Another topic prompted this post. Of the user of a universal type tuning, which do you use on your ABC pedals, Emmons or Day?

I use Emmons....JH

I use an Emmons setup on my Zum and Emmons p/p universals. That's what I started with on E9, and it never occurred to be to change until I read these two threads.

Makes no difference whatsoever. Just like on a D-10 it's just a matter of preference. Some folks are more comfortable flexing their ankle inward, and others outward.

Thanks, I agree with that. What prompted this post was another where someone said that the majority of Universal players used the Day setup so I wanted to do a poll to help find out as I believe it's the other way. He's not with us anymore but the late, great Jeff Newman used the Day setup....Thanks, JH

HI Jerry, I hope things are going good for you. I don't think the U12 has anything to do with it. Some people play "Day" and some play "Emmons". I just happen to use the "Day" setup because I set my first (real)pedal steel up exactly like Ralph Mooney. We didn't have standard setups in those days (1960) and Ralph was there to show me his setup. My Marlen U12 was first owned by Jeff Newman, so it was already set up for me. Jeff did not like to use a B6 lock, so I had Leonard Stadler add a lock before he shipped the Marlen...JD

Emmons on my Carter. It's got the Zero pedal which is cool with the Emmons setup. Wish my Zum had the Zero Pedal.

Emmons on my Carter. Mine is tuned to B6th and I raise strings 4 and 8 with my RR knee to put me in E9th. RL knee lowers 4 and 8 to D and raises my outside Eb to E. This gives me my "missing" D string and also doubles as pedal 6 on a double neck. George

So far (Including Jeff Newman) that's 9 for Emmons and 3 for Day.

John D. I don't know how you'd classify Ralph Mooney as he split his G# raises and had one on each side of his "B" pedal...JH

I'm with Ben - I have a 7X5 - Emmons - Put the zero pedal first - than A&B on pedals 2&3 - and it puts all 6 of your B6th pedals together (B thru 7) I put my 4th string E to F# raise on my lever that raises my 9th string B to D to take the place of the C pedal and get along just fine with that - My Zero (1st) pedal drops the 5th string 1 step and my 11th string down 1&1/2 from E down to C# - I already drop the 5th string 1 step with a lever.

Jerry, The Mooney tuning I referred to was on his 8 string Fender 1000 in the year 1960.
The 1st pedal only raised the 4th string G#. Pedal #2 raised the 4th string G# and 5th string B (Bud Isaacs). Pedal 3 raised the 5th string B and the 1st string G#. Pedal 4 raised the 2nd string E.
20 years later, Frank Arnett told me that he had convinced Ralph to only raise one string with each pedal,1 thru 4(ala Arnett). I played a lot with these guys, played their guitars and knew their tunings.
They may have changed tunings since then, As I did. Have a good one. I wish you didn't live so far from me. We could do some living in the past for sure.......JD

I have the Emmons A+B, getting my C with A + knee pull. I like that approach better on a universal. 3,4,5 are screw-ups per Jon Light.

BTW- is the Zero pedal the G#-->G lower, or the PF? or other?

Thanks!

Since you're counting, mine are ABC (Emmons split), also with a '0' pedal

It's all on my website, Jerry. Just follow the links below. The Beast (my push-pull) is my 'lean and mean' setup (to steal a phrase from my buddy Al Marcus) and The Bomb (my Fessy) has all the bells and whistles. Just look in the 'Equipment' section of my site.

Day on both my Carter and Mullen. I've used the Day setup ever since I started playing pedal steel. It just feels better to me.
