Highlander Biscuit Brige Pickups

Has anyone tried one of these on their Dobro? What about even volume on all strings, tone, clarity, etc. They are pretty expensive, but I've tried Spyder, Barcus Berry, McIntyre and they all suck.

Try the Lace Sensor Dobro pickup, I like mine.

Chris you might look into the Pick Up The World transducers. I've got a mod #20 on a biscuit coned solid body and just put a #27 on a tricone. Rich Mermer (do a search) has one on a tricone I built for him and loves it. They require a pre-amp like the rest and EQ is usually neccesary in any set up to control feedback in a reso. But I've found the PUTWs to be more transparent and natural sounding and they have NO piezo quack.

Chris, I haven't tried one but I heard one on a metal body guitar through a Mesa Boogie amp with no pre amp or EQ and I thought it sounded pretty darn good compared to the McIntyre. DZ

Thanks for the reply. Does that pickup allow you to plug straight into an amp or D/I without a preamp? I couldn't tell from the picture if it came with or required a preamp.

Needs a preamp. There is an "internal" model and an "external" model.

Chris and Dave,

You both mentioned that you were not satisfied with the McIntyre transducer pickup. Maybe I'm being dumb here, if so please forgive me, but could it be that maybe they've improved them lately? I recently installed a McIntyre on my dobro, and everyone that's heard it thinks it sounds great. The strings respond very evenly and actually the tone seems to be quite good, loud and clear with no "quack" to it (better than I had expected actually). It sounds a WHOLE LOT better than the McIntyre and the Barcus-Berry pickups on the demo guitars at Elderly Instruments, and I don't even have a Quarterman cone! I did try to do a real careful job when I installed the unit, I've got a pretty decent spider and saddles and nothing rattles or buzzes on my guitar. Also I don't play at extreme volume levels, maybe that's why I've had good luck so far. But if I can expect trouble in some future playing situation, I'd like to know ahead of time if possible. Thanks!

Tim, you are not being dumb at all. I was dumb for saying what I said about the Mcyntire. I never played through one. I played in a band with someone who used one. It was a loud band and he probably didn't really know how to use it since he was new to the Dobro. He wasn't using an EQ or pre amp. He was plugging into a 40 watt Fender amp which was miked. I should have given it more of a chance and tried it myself before I formed my opinion.
