A friend recently gave an old MSA D-11. All it says in MSA on the front and CUSTOM on the fret boards which have chess pieces as markers. The body is stamped 8 17 66 and 2053. So... I imagine it was built in 1966. It is very "vintage" but not in the charismatic way. The Pickups also have 12 coils instead of 11 to correspond with the strings.
It is not in very pretty and is a 9x2, some of the knee levers were likely removed?
I am thinking about trying to restore it as a project and was wondering if it would be worth my time and frustration. Are there even parts available still?
If anyone could tell me anything about this guitar, I would much appreciate it. Thanks, Adam Jaffe.

Reece may be able to tell you for sure, but I doubt it came with more than 2 levers (that was about it back in the '60s). It probably is a mid '60s MSA, made before Micro Machining was a part of the company. It's nowhere near the guitar that the "Micro" model was, design-wise, but they didn't sound too bad. (I think most of these had the "script" MSA logo instead of the block letters.) MSA started producing in '64, I believe, and I saw my first one on the Opry stage in 1966. They probably didn't make more than a couple D11's! |

Thanks for the info Donny. It does have the block letters on the front. My friend who gave it ot me said that the guy he got it from said it used to belong to George Jones's steel player (sorry, I don't know his name). I guess it may be worth putting some time into because of the rarity. It sure is a strange Duck! Thanks again for your info, Adam |

The late and great steel player, Danny Shields, played an MSA D-11 but he had his name on the front and it was an 8x5 pedal setup. He also played using the Day setup. |

thanks for the info John. Maybe my info is not correct. It was coming from a 3rd party after all. This is a 9x2 and looks to have some type of history for better or for worse. Thanks, Adam |

Hi Ron. I will definately keep that in mind. I am going to Arizona for the holidays but will be back after new years and who knows, that may be a project that is a bit above my skill level with steels. It has a case with zebra interior and an extra set of pedal rods for a shorter person. The last owner must have been pretty tall. Thanks for posting the pics and I will get back to you after new years or before if my moms computer is working. Happy Holidays, Adam |
