Dunlop potz

The Dunlop 470k pots I see online appear to have a flat milled on the shaft. Is this the case with the stock that Tom Bradshaw and the other steel vendors sell, or do these have a shaft that is totally round?

Also how do you guys deal with wiring to those studs on the back of the Dunlops?

I didn't get mine from a steel vendor, just from a generic seller on ebay. Yes, they have a flat milled section on the shaft. I screwed the set screw directly onto this flat section which seemed to work but a completely round shaft would be better.

The answer to wiring those studs is "with difficulty". I wrapped the wires around the lugs and soldered. Not sure how durable that is. I guess time will tell. Obviously not as good as proper solder lugs where you can make a decent mechanical connection.

Jerry..Soldering those tiny studs can be a bit tricky. You may want to check with Tom however, seem to recall that he was offering them with leads attached to simplify installation..The Dunlop pots that I have feature the flat side.

You have to use sufficient heat to get solder to stick to the lugs. On an Emmons vol. pedal, the ends of the lugs almost strike the moving part of the pedal. I solder close to the body of the pot, then use a Dremel tool to grind the lugs away till I am satisfied with the clearance. A little extra trouble, but I have a Dunlop pot thats been going for six years. To be fair, I have two complete rigs, so this pot has gotten only half the use for that time.

Thanks for the info guys. I might try one in my old MSA pedal. I also have a dual action Goodrich pedal and there's absolutely no clearance for those Dunlop lugs on the front pot, so I'll have to try something else.

I got some rebuild tips from Mr. Willie Sims a while back concerning the old AB style so I may have to do that for this pedal. I don't think anyone is selling reliable pots for volume pedals configured like the old AB's, Clarostats, Ohmite etc.

The pots that we have made at Goodrich are quite similar to the Dunlop pots with the exception of having round shafts as opposed to the Dunlop "D shafts" and we have a slot in the end to allow for adjustment once the pot is in place. The D shafts that Dunlop pots employ require repositioning the pot in order to get the proper rotation and that can be a pain. If soldering the lead wires to the connectors is a problem for the user, we supply pots with leads already soldered on them for a very reasonable fee.

On further inspection, I'm concerned that the lugs on the back of the pot won't clear the housing on my pedals.

The Goodrich, or the old MSA, which is exactly the same.

The pots are mounted at 90Â°, east to west in the case and I can see barely â…›" between the back of the pot and the housing. I don't know if the Dunlops will work. Anybody else experienced a lack of clearance with these?

Here's a Goodrich pot prior to installation that I purchased from Bill Ferguson. Bill soldered the wires on the pot for me, made for an easy & quick installation with included diagram. I tried to portray the distance on the back of the pot in the pictures.

Thanks for your generous offer Bill. I have a couple of Dunlop pots coming from an online source off board the forum. I won't know what I'll need until I get them. I have the tools and skills to solder, so we'll see.

I appreciate your kind offer and may have to call on you for help with these after I receive them.
