John

Don't forget the Euro.
$1.33.
Seems to me that the States will laugh the loudest after all this is gone.
We have seen this before a couple of years ago.

Yes, yes, for buying stuff from here.
Great exchange rate for those with cash in euros or sterling.

But it may NOT be a laughing matter down the line in the states...
Sure it ~LOOKS like they may be selling everything...
but there is STILL stuff to import..
and that is costing an arm and a leg .

It maybe that they are trying to sell the debt cheap, and then pay back with strong dollars later...
IF they get it strong enough it time....
If not we are ALL in the hopper.

But for now it IS a great deal for euro purchases of steels...

I'm not sure there's going to be a lot of laughing coming up. There's been some real subtle moves by Red China in currency buying as well as their oil buying spree just before our election. IT almost worked.

How it'll shake out is anybody's guess.

So, it's time to buy that New Emmons, huh?

JUST KIDDING!

Farris, you're a nice guy, but nobody jerked your chain.

I think there are enough cops around without us getting ratted out and screaming for the teacher everytime something hurts your head.

The thread is about how the Euro Dollar Exchange rate is good for buying American Steel Guitars right now. My comments reflect the same. Maybe cautioning against putting money on one that might not be delivered for a couple years. There are a lot of factors that go into long term exchange rate stability.

I think it's pretty pertainant.

You had nothing to contribute, but as always, it seems it didn't keep you from posting to the topic at hand.

It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder;

How I keep from going under..

Ouch - thanks for the reminder
The dollar/sterling rate was a lousy 1.3 when I bought my Sierra
I'm not really complaining though - rates fluctuate and theres nothing anyone can do about it.

Farris have I hurt you in some way? it was never my intention.

exchange rates rubs both ways.... good for your exports though....

I could not afford to buy my Peterson VS11 here it would cost me $375 but my friend will send it to me from MA for total $240!!

All the UK steelplayers I meet seem to fall in love with my "Walker" seat........ well now is the time they should be buying one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Farris, if not for the exchange rate right now I would already have a U-12.

Yes I live here, but I send money the OTHER WAY, regularly...
since the rates are so out of sync, I can't afford another steel. 2 years ago I could have quickly.

This is DIRECTLY affecting my steel guitar progress, and so I felt it was pertinent.

I was also pointing out that they aught to jump on it shortly,
because things could likely change back, or go in the tank quickly
and we can't tell when acurately.
It could likely be a long down turn, or there be a drastic intervention shortly... but not from the USA.

Secondly, yes b0b is our cop, lord and seigner, not you,
we have received no warnings from b0b.
If you don't like the thread leave it. Simple as that.
It is easy for you to complain about our comments vs the exchange rate...
since it doesn't ( at this time) affect you.

But for us this IS a big deal, and must be looked at with-in the big picture.

Hey, Farris, wasn't your comment about those wonderful Excel steels that everyone should "buy American?" Well, at the moment, it looks like the English, the Europeans and the Japanese could pretty easily buy all the American there is -- and cheaper than any of us could! Then us folks here at home might not be able to afford to "buy American."

P.S. Let's not turn this into a Farris-bashing thread, although I'm sure that old cuss can take a few elbows in the ribs. The fact is, most of us don't understand the global economy any better, and it's just scary.

Hi Duncan
actually, it's just a matter of economic circumstances
for decades we have been used to a strong dollar and have always paid a lot for US made goods
please retain that imported goods get slammed w: 25 % customs fees here in the EEC.
With the exchange rate as it is now, it permits us to have shipping & custom fees included in what you guys normally pay for a steel.
now that the cat is out of the bag, i hope the prices won't rise when dealin' w: us here
ps: Duncan, i'll be seeing Joel next Saturday
the Fessy won't be here by then, but we'll raise our glasses to ya'

Right now the dollar is way down. But Oilprices are going thru the roof over here.
Everybody is talking about cheap steels. But that is nothing compared with all the troubles that are laying ahead of us.
Steel guitars are instruments that don't lose value very quick.
If you have some money to invest I would suggest to buy some steel guitars.
However if you order a couple of steels and you should send a check with the downpayment please don't forget that the dollar could be going up.Downpayment is 10% of the total value.
That leave's 90% to be payed. If the Euro goes down 10 cents you are in trouble.

I have to agree with that.
But don't forget that Europe probably will not import goods from a continent that has low currency

Yes the oil prices are absurd right now.

Lasy Nov oil bill was 215€
this Nov. was 305€

When I moved here in 2000 it was 180€

Lets see new steel or heat... hmmmm, tough one.

and how much for a gallon in Texas ?

Crowbear.

I made a calculation the other day and I came to a grand total of $6,22 per Gallon over here.
Go figure.
A Gallon is 3,78 liters.
A Gallon Regular is $2 over in Texas.
That comes to 1,54Euro per Gallon in Texas.
We pay to much huh?

Hey Crowbear,
Honestly, my last comment was totally in jest. I believe that a fair deal was made all around. If the currents of the international market happen to work out in Joel's favor, then I'm happy for him. In this case, the fact that he got a good deal didn't hurt me a bit. In fact, I'll raise a pint to the both of you this Saturday.

Hi all,

I'm not sure it works out so cheap to buy a steel from the US. I'm talking to a guy about a Fender 400 - not exactly big and heavy. The guitar looks cheap with the exchange rate, but the shipping is the killer. USPS wants the best part of $300+ !!

I think I may just wait to see if one comes up over here....
