Hello just bought a 1950-51 fender double 8 steel guitar, I don't know how to play and would like some help in setting up the guitar, what strings do you all recommend and what tuning? Thanks for any help.[/b] |

Hi Paul
Welcome to the forum.
If it's 50-51 then it's probably a non-pedal steel guitar?? (There's a separate section of the forum for "Non pedal guitar")
But either way, it does depend on the kind of music you want to play, as Jeff said.
If it is a non pedal guitar then a classic combination is a C6 tuning and one of the E tunings - I play C6 and E13.
Knowing the type of guitar and the music you're interested in will help.
If it's a pedal steel guitar then you're probably going to go c6 and e9
Once you've figured out what tunings you want you can look at the "strings" link at the top of this page and buy the set you need for the tuning you want.

I would suggest you start with these. E13 on the front and C6 [ECAGECAG hi to low] on the back. Maybe A6 using the same string set.
These are very common tunings for a D8. Once you get familiar with the guitar, you may decide to experiment with other tunings, but these have been used by a lot of players for a long time. |
