I was fortunate and got a new reverb in a local trade and I just had to let the forum know about it. It's the Stargazer by Hungry Robot Pedals in Iowa. Best reverb I've ever used and I can't stress that enough. The "Sparkle" is like a Shimmer type effect, but doesn't add that pitch-shifting sound to the decayed signal. Eric, the owner/builder, got back to me within minutes and is already working with me on some tweaks and custom builds. I used it on a small acoustic gig and it reminds me a lot of how Mr. Franklin described his Adverb as being mixed very wet on stage but sitting more subtlely in the live mix. Anyway, here's a link. Cool. I heard a nice demo of a shimmer effect that impressed me so I went out and bought a very cheapo mini reverb w/shimmer that sounded so crappy as to be useless. Yes, it was all modulated and warbly which was a problem but it was also just bad, grainy 'verb. Thank goodness for return policies. Good reminder that you get what you pay for.
But a good usable shimmer can def be nice. |

Jon, I didn't really use the Sparkle switch on the gig. This thing has a great sound without it. I usually just use my twin's reverb. The Stargazer is a dual reverb, so the left switch is on/off and the one on the right switches between the two channels (each with its own Mix and Decay knobs and Sparkle switch.) Two reverb pedals in one! I dialed one in for my "always on" sound and the other with a much more ambient and wet sound. The LED at on the right changes color to indicate which reverb channel is active. Also, switching from the ambient washy channel to my tighter setting doesn't seem interrupt the decay trails of the other channel, if that makes sense.

| Man, I think reverb is the hardest thing to emulate in a pedal. . . Almost every one I've ever tried has failed - mostly I hear the flangey effect on the decay, or some of them put in fake spring "boings" which drive me crazy. The original Holy Grail was pretty good but all of the EHX pedals I've ever owned have gone noisy on me after a while (went through 3 of those. . the newer ones don't stand up.) I've about decided that a nice smooth analog delay is a better solution if I can't have a real tank. But I'm gonna check this out, thanks for the lead! |

I just invested in a Catalinbread Topanga to put in front of my tweeds. I'm replacing my Boss FRV-1 which is pretty dang good, but so far, I'm loving the Topanga. One trick pony, as they say, but the right trick for me. I think it emulates the springs better than anything I've tried yet.
