that's a nice neat application, however, this concept has been worked on for over 30 years and still nobody really cares. of course, phil was a master of it. beyond that, the vince gills of the world have made better music without benders and they're not tied to a box on the floor with a 4 foot cord. |

As a kid (around 11 or 12), I remember a guitar with pedals at the house. This was about 30 years ago. My dad says it was an Epiphone. I had to play it sitting down because it was so heavy! _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Hugh, nice work and playing.
Musical innovations often follow technical innovations.
Don't be discouraged. PSGF is loaded with traditionalists who are rarely at a loss for opinions.
Keep up the good work.

'cept it's not Hugh, it's David Evans. Pretty cool though. Looks much more compact than the clunky old MSA mechanism |

Did you look at Tommy Turman's invention in 1960? His was a pedal to a motorcycle cable and making a B Bender. I think he made fewer than two dozen. _________________ Chris Lucker

Really? I'm guessing you haven't been out to see many live guitar players in the last 10 years… _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

Hey Bryan........go read the rules of the Forum about politics and political statements. Chris has the right to to express his opinion just like you do......Given the number of 6 string guitar players in the world, and the number of pedal operated 6 string guitars made, I would say that theres a bit of truth in what Chris says. However, it is an accomplisment to build and play one of those guitars ......... |

It IS an interesting invention and people have done some nice things with them.....But what keeps occurring to me is that a pedal steel guitar does more of those things better,to the point that it gets you further ahead to play one of those than to re-invent the wheel.The whole pedal/six-string mashup puts me in mind of all the folks who have tried since the Thirties to develop automobiles that fly. |

Here's one from Bigsby;
I almost bought a unit like Phil's from a guy on Ok. several years ago, but I didn't like the Tele it was mounted on, so I passed. I have a Hipshot with the B, and G benders, and three toggles to drop it into Low Bass G tuning. I play the B with the hip lever and play the G lever with my wrist. I can pretty much do all those licks in the OP link. I have a peg bender for the first string to raise it a half step, but I haven't put it on yet. Problems with my left hand. But, ya know, if you barre a C chord at the 4th fret, that's pretty much how a steel is tuned. So my levers and peg bender will give me the three pedals. I bought the Hipshot as sort of a challenging game to play. Used the Kline on stage. Pic with G lever in playing position.
I took the toggles off as I now have two National Acoustic-Electric archtops from the Fifties. One in G tuning and one in D tuning for playing bottleneck. And obviously, the Hipshot is now on my Dano Guitarlin. Hughey land is available! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!
