The tone control on my '57 Stringmaster does absolutely nothing. Before I go and change the pot I was wondering if it could be the cap?
Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing?

Most likely the cap. Easy to replace too... just about anything from .005 to .01 will work. Verify no wires are broken inside before replacing, however.
