Took me 5 months to get these three right for Lee's refurbished Fender Custom ... 38 AWG bondable magnet wire "string thru coil" ... 1.94 k Ohms ... Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet assembly creates the correct field orientation ...
Lee discusses the unit on the "Lap Steel Lunatics" Facebook page ... Where he has posted another video of the original pickups in this custom before the retrofit ...

I know the Customs (and Duals) have a great sound, but when I've thought about looking for one, I hear a clip from someone where they sound a bit raw and microphonic, and plinky past the twelfth fret. Of course this probably varies from guitar to guitar, but that along with the buzzing you always hear about has always given me second thoughts.
I really like the sound of the new pickup compared with Lee's first video with the original pickups. Much smoother, with a rounder top end without losing the character of the basic Fender Custom sound.

When I set off to do this after the Ft. Collins HSGA convention ... I basically used a "souped" up version of the original ... It failed miserably...
After about 10 prototypes (and about 4 lbs of wire) ... I must have given up 3 or 4 times ...
But every time I started to box up the remagged original magnets and bobbin/coils (which were in good shape) and send them back to Lee ... I couldn't bring myself to quit.
The originals have a major design flaw that only allowed a fraction of the usable field to be utilized ... When I went back and worked through Maxwell's equations, Faraday's law & the Lorentz force ... I figured out exactly how the originals did function ... albeit at far less than optimal levels ...
Jason Lollar and my "MRI" pickup that we made some 10-12 yrs ago ... with their 360 degree field ... improved on the originals some (as far as the field orientation and strength goes) ... But not to the extent of this unit ... Plus this one doesn't require a bobbin, which is nice 
Then came the issue of building a fully functional unit ... Within the space restraints of the original Trap case ...
All in all ... I'm quite pleased on how they turned out |

Thanks for all the kind words ...
My youngest, Luigi, starts Kindergarten in the fall ... I'm going to make a dedicated winding area where I can make L&M Pickups , the "Traps" in original cases or in fabricated cases ... Repair folks Ricky pickups ... And build NIBro magnets ...
If this goes well, the next year I want to have an inside "sand casting" building ... Where I can make Maximojo Combos ... All year round ...
I went to Nashville to visit my buddy Jeff Kearns ... And gave his unit a 1 yr checkup ...
He did this tune on Facebook ... I hope y'all can see/ enjoy it ...

Rick, so this is available to public with Trap. Fender PU??
Mine was rewound by Tom Brantley with 43ga. wire-
Works fine, the coil doesn't rattle in the trap case anymore, but I am seriously interested in your new coil-
Also my frying pan needs to be checked at too- |

Eventually ... I'm pretty "wound out" right now  ...
I'm lobbying the Boss (my wife) right now for a little shop ... We had one put up to get my milling machine out of her basement .. ... But it soon became just another storage barn for bikes, saddles, mini-bikes, corn, oats, etc ...
My dream is to have a place where I can move from machine to machine ... Without having to break down each piece of equipment in order to put up another ... 
The simple joy of moving from my mill ... to a grinder ... to a sander ... to a buffer ...
A lofty dream I know |

I used to have music room, and my pedal steel was set up with Vol.pedal and effect loop and all- all I needed to do was to flip a switch ( and sit behind it)-
I no longer have that luxury- so if/when my inspiration hits me, I need to yank out the case from closet and assemble---
By the time I'm done hooking up tuner out, my inspiration has pretty much vaporized- doing a few AB pedal licks and toying with Franklin pedal possibility- and that's about it.  I hear what you mean! |
