I just got done cutting down, and re-covering the arm-rest pad on my new (to me) 2003 Zumsteel SD-10. I trimmed it down by 2", and re-covered it in tooled black vinyl. I think it came out pretty good, it shows more of the mica, and lets the wood resonate a little more.

It does look nice but it would look better at my house.

Good looking steel. I never saw that particular design on a Zum before. Where are you at in NY, Bob?

Bob, I think it looks really pretty. I have wondered about the properties of the SD cabinet with the pad reduced or removed. The first time I saw one I immediately thought, "big resonant surface." My intuition is that it would make a difference, especially at stage volume. Kind of like a semi-hollow six string. What have you noticed with your Zum?

Ill let you know. Right now the guitar is off to John Widgren for a tune-up. John knows his stuff, and I cut down the pad on his recommendation. It makes sense, you wouldn't cover half of a solid body telecaster in foam....it'd be a tone killer. I just think less is better? Maybe allows the wood to resonate more freely?

To follow up on the Zum…. I just got it back from John Widgren and it is very resonant with the smaller pad. Just rings unplugged, so I do believe it makes a difference. Again, JW did an amazing job on this guitar, everything is back to E9 and it plays like "butta"!

That is a beautiful looking Zum. Nice wood combo.
I have an unrelated question.
I see you have your ABC pedals move over a slot where the A is under the nut. That seems like an ergonomic advantage. My question, how is the cabinet drop? Did moving the pedals away from the leg affect it?
Thanks, john

The pedals were like that when I got it, and appeared to be the original set-up. When John Widgren went over it he said it had really not "much" more cabinet drop then a standard set-up. He also said it was very comfortable. i do like it as well. Maybe he can chime in.....as I am no expert.

I was a little concerned about a potential cabinet drop issue, but upon playing it I found that the small amount of cabinet drop is well within acceptable parameters and is a total non issue.

So its great. I think the non issue with the
cab is a result of exceptional design and excellent build quality.

Parenthetically: Yes, cabinet drop is real, but often times what some deem to be "cabinet drop" turns out to be a set-up or other issue.

Enjoy that horn Bob its a beauty!

Best to all.

JW
