Try a 12 that's what I use.
And make it a Live Steel string.

What scale is the instrument? G# is getting up there for a 25" scale instrument... Where does the string break - could there be a rough or sharp spot in a tuner hole, or over the saddle or nut?

Just out of curiosity what brands of strings are you using? Might be just a cheap brand. I used to use SIT strings, and they would last me awhile but I always found burrs on the strings .014 and under, so I stopped using them.

Winding? Do you mean where it winds around the tuning peg, or where it's wound to the ball at the bridge?

If it's breaking at the tuning peg...try allowing extra length for at least 3 or 4 wraps around the peg to allow it to move away from the hole.

Every E9 pedal steel has a G# that pulls to an A!
what it the scale length? size does matter.
Ernie ball .011s should make that pitch every time...

Keep us posted, it should work.

I've run into this problem a couple of times with thin gauge strings when I've pulled on the string too much, too soon. The result has been two bends in the string. One where I first started to wind the string and another bend where the string goes through the post. Sooner or later the string will break at the bend that is away from the tuner post hole. It may be within the 3 or 4 winds around the post. The string won't lie flat. As string tension straightens out the bend, the string breaks. Not saying this is what is causing your problem but something to consider.

there shouldn't be a bend in the string away from the post.
