Anyone know much about these? Someone is offering me one in trade. I can't find the wattage listed, about 30-35? The seller said he thought on that amp the normal preamp section was like a tweed and the Vibrato like a BF. Sound right?

Thanks!

I've had a couple of eras of tweed, a brown, and a blackface Pro (no reverb) at one time or another. The blackface 63-65 Pro is different than the brown or tweed version. The Pro is more or less analogous to a Pro Reverb (2x12") or blackface Vibroverb (1x15") similarly to what a blackface Deluxe is to a blackface Deluxe Reverb or a blackface Princeton is to a Princeton Reverb. Blackface tonality, 'bug' tremelo, and so on.

Beyond no reverb, these amps are missing that extra gain stage of the Reverb versions, so there's a little less juice going into the phase inverter. Probably on the order of 30-35 watts as you say, a bit less than the Pro Reverb or Vibroverb due to the lack of that extra gain stage. All the blackface no-reverb amps I've played are pretty much clean machines with a pretty bright spanky sound. I have a cool blackface Deluxe Amp right now - if I want more gain, I just give the signal a bit of a boost, but it's great as-is.

Dave, I agree with you. The non-reverb BF Fender amps are really great for steel. My current favorite small club amp is a '63 non-reverb Deluxe. The rockers disdain them, because they don't breakup as soon as the reverb models. But for me, on steel, that's what I like. Clean and warm. When I want break-up, I've got my Earth Drive.

They are sort of rare, but they cost significantly less than the reverb models.

in the 40 to 50 watt category a viable option is a BF or SF Bassman as in 50 watts. An unencumbered front end. The Normal Channel is GLORIOUS !
