In the early 90's, I was roadying for Buddy in St. Louis, maybe Scotty's Christmas show or a seminar, and I met a couple of characters named "Big Red" & his sidekick, Ray. "Big Red" was a jolly fellow, liked his beer and I think he was a truck driver too.
I was wondering about them. Anybody know them and how they are? _________________ Excel 3/4 Pedal With An 8 String Hawaiian Neck, Sierra Tapper (10 string with a raised fretboard to fret with fingers), Single neck Fessenden 3/5

Chris, Perhaps the "Big Red" you are referring to was Red Burlekamp, surely misspelled. He was always referred to as "Big Red" or "Red" and was a friend of Ray Price and Buddy Emmons, as well as most musicians around St. Louis and St. Charles counties, Missouri. Regards, Jay Thompson |

Chris,
The fellow named Ray may have been Ray McDaniels. Ray was a lead guitar player. While living in St. Charles, I had the opportunity to play in both their bands

Chris,
I can't, at the moment, think of Ray's last name, but
he definitely wasn't Ray McDaniels that played guitar.
Ray McDaniels was father to 'Ramo', who played bass with Wally
Murphey in Nick Nixons band and also in Wallys trio 'Cow Jazz'.
The Ray that was a drinkin' pal of Big Reds
was one of Reds fellow Moose-lodge members.
Big Red was on the country music scene since at least as far back
as the fifties, as I've heard stories from Scotty and Bobby Caldwell
about how Red would 'take care' of the musicians, namely Ray Prices,
when they would come to town, often to Johnny Ryons 'Hillbilly Park'
(where, by the way, Scotty and Bobby Caldwell encountered each other
for the very first time).
Big Red drove a gravel truck, looked after his elderly Mother, never
married (that I ever knew of) and, thru the summer, raised homegrown
tomatoes which he often brought by sackfuls to Scottys Music to share with us.
Red sang several country shuffles and anytime Scotty had a 'local' steelshow
or when Darrel McCall or Buddy Emmons would be playing around town, they'd
get Red up to 'render a few'.
Red kept his cooler of beer close-by, always offered those around
him a 'Cold One' and was always great fun to 'carry on' with.
Red wasn't necessarily bothered by women: He was all
about Cold Beer & Ray Price Shuffles!
His actual name was Kenneth Burlekamp and
he would have been 83 or 84 years old now.
Red has been gone now for, gosh, a good fifteen years at least.
Not sure about Ray . . . never saw him without Red . . .

Thanks for filling things in, Russ. "Render a few". Funny! He sure was a big fella. I wanna say that Coors Light was his beverage of choice. Could have been Bud Light. A big "hello to you, Russ! _________________ Excel 3/4 Pedal With An 8 String Hawaiian Neck, Sierra Tapper (10 string with a raised fretboard to fret with fingers), Single neck Fessenden 3/5
