What is the worst thing you've ever sat on to play steel? I remember taking a lesson once, sitting on a kitchen chair on top of TWO Nashville city phone books. I think there have been other times, but that's the one I remember the best. The instructor thought it was pretty funny, and I could still barely reach the Knee-levers!

I think the worst was:
a flight case for my Telecaster. I was doing a two week tour with Janie Fricke, and somehow left my pac seat at the last gig. No way to get it back in time as it was two states away. (never did get it back)
I finished the tour sitting on that dad-blamed flight case. (ouch!)

i began using a "pack- a- seat" back in 1982.
but before that... it was a nightmare.
i remember sitting on one of those all metal chairs, you know, the ones used on waiting areas. i felt like i was hiding under my guitar and when you have long legs by nature...can you imagine??? |

My first "pedal" steel was a stand up Fender triple neck. I had two pedals and a Bigsby volume pedal. I stood the case on its end and tilted it forward and pretty much propped up with it. It seemed OK at the time but thinking back it had to be very uncomfortable.

I had to grab a log (that hadn't been split yet) from aside the fire place at the Elk Horn Saloon in Cooke City, Montana one night (all the chairs were taken).
If nothing else, I thought it looked cool!

| A bale of hay-while playing for a horse ranch private party. Flying to the gig the airlines lost my pac a seat, I did get the steel and when we got to the gig there was nothing to set on except low folding chairs and nothing to stack on top of the chair. So we moved a hay bale over to the steel and it worked. Sat on that the whole gig, and the cowboys loved it. Duane Becker |

| I was playing an outdoor gig and had to sit on a cardboard lettuce crate. It slowly collapsed during the evening so I sat lower and lower. |

| Saw a guy in Montana that sat on a bar stool and tilted the steel way forward. He also had a 12 volt car battery on stage to power his effects. I saw Robert Randolf with the Allman Brothers band on TV a couple of days ago, he used a folding chair, didn't spend a lot of time in it. |
