New Clip of the Week 01/31/16

Post by Walter Stettner »

Good Morning,

Here's a special one this week - two steel players featured on the same tune. This didn't happen too often on commercial recordings for backing up a vocalist. I know of a few other examples, but recently discovered this one:

Enjoy the music!

The Wulburn Brothers for sure and I think the steel players are Hal Rugg and Curly Chalker.

Don Helms and Pete Drake with the Wilburn Brothers. Wonder why two steel players were used on that track...

Yes - Two steel players on a Nashville session is seldom seen. Just guessing here but "I
Dreamed of an Old Love Affair" was cut 10/19/64 land during 1964 the Wilburn's
were using both Don Helms and Pete Drake on the same sessions. After Don left Hank he worked in publishing with the Wilburn's and - of course - on their TV show so that might account for the presence of Don. Of course Pete Drake would have been one of the top steel players of that time. Hats off to the Wilburn Brother's featuring steel players and leaving us a lot of footage of Don Helms - Hal Rugg and Curly Chalker at their finest.

This is a great version of this song
